I have a CAV and love it. i looked at the SPF and decided I liked the dtainless steel vs stamped steel better.
If you live in SC than you may not be that far from Johann Keyser the distributer for CAV USA Located near the RDU Airport betwen raleigh and Durham, NC. <www.cav-us.com>
Dennisn Olthoff assembles the Sperformance cars in Mooresville, NC. <[email protected]>
I hope this helps for better to see the two cars and both can be built to your specs.

I can second what Pete says, Dennis builds a fantastic car! Details to the nth degree, plus uses mostly Roush powerplants.

I sold one of my Ferraris to buy my MKI Superformance. My dream was to know what it was like to drive one of the original GT40s, so I wasn't interested in replicas that used tube frames or simplified mono chassis. I wanted the original deal, and that's what Jimmy Price builds at High Tech. Mine is one of the first MKI cars they built, and Dennis Olthoff did the install for me. I love the thing. I got to track it at Road America along with the original race cars this past summer at the Redman Historics, which was an amazing experience. The car is raw, fast and loud. Still, it's got modern Wilwood brakes and air conditioning that does a reasonably good job. There are some water intrusion issues, but that stuff is not hard to sort out, and is part of the "fun" for me. Just remember you are getting a duplicate of a forty year old race car, and don't expect the kind of cushy comfort you get in one of the new Ford GTs. You should spend some time on GT40s.com to get a sense of the owner community. You'll find plenty of support there. Feel free to ping me with any questions.

One other thing I forgot to mention. Dennis Olthoff has been allowed to race his Superformance against the original GT40s at several vintage events and has beaten them all convincingly.

    brian...killer! simply killer!!!!!

do you have any photos w/ them along w/ your 427 kirkham?

i would love for you to describe the drive and associated fanfare you get when driving the mk 1, mk II and cobra...how do they compare to italian exotic cars?

is there an exotic (price independent) that compares to your cars?

what heve been your negative experiences (if any) w/ the three?

    thanks for your detailed reply!

one more comment and one more question:

question: if you could only have 1...would it be the countach or the gt-40 mk1?

i suspect the way brian has equiped his gulf "spa" bodied car...you would be looking at close to $150k. Keep in mind that this is a VERY serious machine and an effective bargain.

not an original but a better car sans the provenance.

brian...you have perfect taste and your photos are always lovely too.

So are the SPF cars exact replicas for the most part??? I'd like to have one as close to original as possible. I love the GT40...

Edit: I'm talking about the chassis and body. The engine can be upgraded to whatever you want and I'm sure the brakes are modern and safe compared to the originals...

chassis and body are 100% identical. only the fuel bladders are changed on the superformance car.

    Peter,
No pictures with the kirkham...will try to take some though.
As for fanfare, it varies. The outskirts of Winfield consist of some great open roads with very little traffic. Some roads I drive for miles without seeing another car....which is great. They do draw attention in town, especially from older gentlemen that remember these cars. They are all so different. As you might imagine, the Kirkham is a blast...phenomenal torque. I have race pipes on it which is one reason why I must go "outside" of town to really enjoy it.
The GT40s are best on long straights with sweeping corners. Both have straight pipes yet sound very different from one another. The MKII is carburated and very loud...the MKI has an 8-stake injection which makes it slightly quieter but sounds much more tuned, not as raw as the MKII.
It is my opinion that nothing quite compares. SPF GT40s are soo fast....it really makes me respect the drivers that raced these cars at 100%.
As for negatives....toll booths are a pain. On the MKI, I have to pull over, get out, run over and pay....but getting back in and running up through the gears on the turnpike makes me forget about this inconvenience. The negatives are sometimes what makes these cars so special.

If this is the case...the SPF is a great choice.

Hmmm....that's less than an 05 FGT. I would rather have the SPF car personally. I love the newer Ford GTs, but this has waaaay more character. Looks the part, too.

Puttin' a quarter in the piggy bank! :)

    Brian,

Your Gulf car looks amazing!!! Could you post another pic of the cockpit?

Did you deal with SPF directly, or is there some dealer network you have to work through?

    Awesome!!!
