I have a second home in Colorado (Breckenridge) and I was wondering what it takes to license a car in Colorado when my permanent residence is in another state. Anyone done this?

When I have brought vehicles from out of state you have to do the following.

    - Get a VIN check done.. This can be done at the local police station or Emission
    Station
    - Get an emission done. I know that if the vehicle is less than 4 years old that
you don't need one.. but I still think when you bring a vehicle in from out
    of state they require it.
    - If the vehicle is older than 10 years then the registration is cheap usually
less than $70. Otherwise it is higher like $400 or more..
    - You will have to surrender your out of state title to get a new title. They
will ask for a photo id to give you a new title on the spot otherwise they
will mail it to the registering address.
    - Proof of insurance. Without it no plate.

    Hope this helps!

    Don't forget about sales tax.
I am not sure how you would prove to DMV that you have not just bought the car out of state other than showing them a receipt that you paid sales tax in another state. On a Ferrari, the tax is quite a bite and varies by local jurisdiction.

<edit>And one more thing, some states have a low flat fee for registration. CO is one of those wonderful states that charge fees like an income tax. Especially for a new Ferrari, that is quite a chunk.

If it is already registered in another state, you won't have to pay sales tax, you are just moving it. If you buy in another state and register here, you pay sales tax, but only Colorado, not where you bought it.

As mentioned above, you need VIN verification. I don't know if Summit county requires emission testing. You will have to ask.

You will have to pay ownership tax which will be about $3. on the M3. Don't know about the others.

Registration fees in Colorado are high... I have a car in Breck, but I don't register it in Colorado... well, I did until I got my first renewal notice... yikes.

I agree the registration fees in colorado can be considered high.. though
if you are coming from a state like california they seem cheap for instance.
One of my ferraris costs a total of $51 a year and another costs $380 a year.

On July 1, 2005, a new law will take effect in Wyoming (House Bill HBO150) which will exempt ANY car from displaying a front tag, as long as a $10 fee has been paid to the county treasurer (for a tag that I guess will be stuck on the back plate). Furthermore, Wyoming has no state income tax, low property taxes and wide open and empty roads through some of the most beautiful country in North America. AND during the summer driving season, the weather's just about the best on Earth. There's an airline pilot who lives in Vail Colorado who drives a 360 with Wyoming plates. I own property in Woodland Park, CO, above Colorado Springs-- but I get all my mail delivered to Wyoming and maintain my residency there (for obvious reasons). Try this link for an example of Wyoming, Ferrari-style: http://www.LaserRadio.com/hoback-river-sml.jpg
