Button scored more points than Hamilton over 3 seasons. Hamilton needed the dominant Mercedes hybrid more than he realised.
You are nit-picking again and again!! Stop using the only stats that fit you agenda. Hamilton won more often than Button over the 3 years, and in the WDC finished ahead of him twice over 3 years.
It all depend which stats you chose. You are of very bad faith, but we knew that, didn't we ? During the 3 years they were together, Hamilton won 10 GPs against 7 for Button.
All of a sudden a driver is judged on a 3 year point system lol, The F1 system has'nt changed, if you score more points than a driver in one year, you beat him. Ham beat button 2 years. End of story. I don't hear you all saying Hamilton scored more points than Rosberg, but you want to bring up the point Rosberg beat Hamilton 2016 lol. weak
Bernie makes some valid points here, especially about drivers like Alain Prost who were "on their own" once the car was on the grid. Today drivers have Mission Control constantly coaching them throughout the race. https://www.planetf1.com/news/bernie-ecclestone-compare-schumacher-hamilton/
Bernie's thoughts align to newer drivers more so than Hamilton, as Hamilton won a championship and multiple races nearly 15 years ago. Some won't agree with Bernie. Verstappen, Leclerc, Norris and others shouldn't be immediately disqualified from being a great because of the era they were born into. Schumacher also had more help than earlier drivers from the 60s and 70s (they often did maintenance/repairs on their car). All a driver can do is dominate in their era.
I detest comparison between drivers of different areas: they are completely useless. They often come from people who try to discredit a driver they don't like; this is more than obvious on this forum.
Has any other person beaten most records in a sport and still not recognised as the best ever by his contemporaries? Says a lot to me
Most drivers use the words "among the best" or "one of the best". Rarely do you hear a driver saying some one is the "best" because of the difficulty comparing eras. An earlier post states Stewart placing Fangio and Clark above Schumacher, even though Schumacher has the most records.
And button scored more points. Typically, the driver with more points ranks higher in the championship. Someone could win 15 GP's but lose the championship to someone that has finished 2nd in every single race.
The problem for Hamilton is that the FIA bent over for the manufacturers and ushered in an era of dominance by Mercedes that is unprecedented. Other teams simply cannot compete for various reasons. Brackley are the best, and will remain the best whether its Bottas, Hamilton, Norris, Gasly or Rosberg in the car.
This is not a "problem" for Hamilton. He already was a WDC and multi winner before he joined Mercedes. When Schumacher was with Ferrari they were also dominant.
Schumacher won two WDCs before joining Ferrari in 1996. Ferrari had last won the WDC in 1979 and WCC in 1983, between 1991 and 1995 the team had a total of three GP victories. In 1996 he won 3 GPs for Ferrari. Ferrari was not dominant when Schumacher joined the team. Check the facts before you post.
When did I say Ferrari was dominate when Schumacher joined? Ferrari became dominate and was dominate for years under the FIA. Fact. Show me where in my post where I was nonfactual?
The Ferrari finally became dominant in 2001 with its well developed tyres following a relentless work ethic. But the Ferrari was only dominant for 2 seasons of a 5 year run. 2000 was a straight fight, without bespoke tyres, against the faster McLaren and Mika. Ditto for 1999, but for a broken leg. FIA got bored with MSC dominance and suddenly changed tyre regs to suit Michelin for 2005. Good for Alonso. Interestigly FIA has not intervened with 7 years of Mercedes dominance. It cannot possibly be about money !
Ferrari won the constructors from 1999-2004. Thats 5 years. Now they may not have been totally "dominant" all those years but neither was Mercedes in 2017-18, when they trailed Ferrari in the championship both years, and Bottas finished 5th and 3rd in the championship
There's a reason for that. In Schumacher's prime era, he was a relentless tester who didn't leave the testing and development of his car to backup/test drivers - he did it himself. And much of the speed differential came through development of aero, suspensions, chassis, tires, etc. It was not the case back then that one team had such horsepower advantages over the others. In fact, during Schumacher's dominant era at Ferrari, he didn't have the most powerful engine - an outright power advantage was sacrificed in favor of reliability. The main differentiator that Ferrari had throughout that whole era was, in fact, Michael Schumacher. They wouldn't have won so many of those championships without him. Modern F1 drivers spend all their time in the simulator and the car is developed by engineers running countless computer simulations. There's so much data recording on the car that the value of driver input is really diminished in comparison to earlier eras. The title fight in the modern era is not as close as it once was between differing teams. The only reason Mercedes has not finished 1-2 in every championship since 2014 is because Bottas' first two seasons with the team were a little shaky. Last year and this year, either he's raised his game to make sure he finishes #2 or the car is just that much more dominant in 2019 and 2020 in comparison to 2017 and 2018... the FIA seemed to neuter Ferrari's recent engine development, after all. Dominance over different eras is difficult to compare. Personally, I think it meant more when Schumacher was dominant in a more competitive series. Your mileage may vary. All the best, Andrew.
I agree on some pints. Yes its different to compare eras, many people would rate Fangio's or Clarks dominance more than Schumacher's because Schumacher era had more tech, or was safer. F1 is always changing. All a driver can do is dominate in their era.
The Ferrari was not dominant until 2001, and McLaren caught up quickly. Michael was bridging the car defecit in 1999 and 2000.
