You're right, the 63 motor does not have as much torque as the 55, yet it has more horsepower.

So the SL55 does 0-60 in 4.0 seconds, as to where the SL63 (the newer and improved model) does it in 4.5 seconds-go figure.

I think the reason they did is because the 63 engine is just more of a race engine, more horsepower, higher revving and naturally aspirated, just better for a car marketed as a "race-car for the road." They still sell the 55 mtor in the G-Class, a car where torque is very important (off-roader).

I know I'm starting to get off topic, but this is stuff that I love:

If it was me, in charge or AMG, I would have a V8 Naturally Aspirated Motor, high revving, horsepower>torque, then a V8 with torque>horsepower, either supercharged or turbocharged.

Then I would pick and choose which models work best with each motor, or maybe even off both engines on all models.

Then I would make the mother of all engine, V12, high revving, a mass amount of torque and horsepower.

There is passion to Mercedes, its just a German version of it in that everything is very logical and functional (at least the older ones).
If you want to see a soul-less car then look towards Toyota/Lexus...although the unintended acceleration should make them more interesting to drive =)

    My photos... not my car.

BTW, this thread should be moved to "General Automotive". It was my understanding that this "Showroom" forum is for photos & videos of Ferraris. The other Ferrari forums are intended for Ferrari discussion. But hey, I'm not a moderator so I don't get a vote.

    280SL, right?

There's one in the museum at the Mercedes museum at the Stuttgart factory. . . It was the one car there that my mother and I BOTH fell in love with!

    Manual transmission?

    Exactly!

That's definitely something that angers me, people say that Mercedes have no passion, well they really do, it's just different type.

AMG is really starting to make some amazing cars, already way over BMW's M, though they are still making the regular models with big AMG engines, they are now designing sports cars to compete with Ferrari and Porsche (SLR, SL65 Black, SLS, CLK63 Black).

Also, I think since around 2007, Mercedes has gotten their act together, 2000-06 were not the best years for them as far as quality, but they seem to have regained their reputation of rock solid cars again.

Once again, I agree with you on the Toyota/Lexus thing. Mainly Lexus, it literally angers me when people compare Lexus to Mercedes and even BMW and Audi. Lexus it literally a Toyota with a "L" on it, along with some wood trim-thats it! Some of the Lexus cars in the US are exactly the same in Japan, but called Toyotas.

I was once talking to someone who drove a Lexus, and when Mercedes came up, he said he didn't like it because "you're paying for the emblem." I couldn't say another word to him.

+1. I would even stretch that time line out a little and say from 96-06 is the dark period for Mercedes. This was when they were internalized into the "Daimler Umbrella" which had massive cashflow problems and wanted Mercedes to prop them up...needless to say it didnt work and hurt the brand terribly.

I had to listen to a similar conversation between to women here at work who thought that "Mercedes and Lexus are pretty much the same thing when you look at it. Just paying for the badge"...I actually lost sleep that night haha

To be honest, I don't think that I will. I love the [relative] lightness of the S55 compared to the S63. I thought about the S65 but I like the supercharged cars a bit more. I like a lot of the new features of the S63 and may end up adding a FLIR Camera to mine for night vision soon. I really love the AMG S Classes. It is tough to find a more useful car for daily use that can do what this does.

The last 2 weeks I've seen a CLK-63 AMG at my doctors office. Not in the doctors parking lot oddly enough. Beautiful car!

    Hi,

my daily driver is a 500 SEC: quiet and fast ( nearly 150 mph ). Not bad for an old car...

    Regards

Love the 126 SEC's. Ahead of their time. If I had more garage space I would have one...

Not bad at all! I remember the 500 SEC and 560 SEC very fondly :)
