I have recently seen the thread posted by another member about Leland West Insurance not insuring him because of his daily driver. Let me tell you that anyone having insurance with them is not safe. You are not grandfathered in to anything. I have been with them for over 10 years. I have never had a claim, perfect record and currently have a Ferrari, two Porsches and two Maseratis insured with them. I have been calling them for over two weeks to insur another Ferrari that I just purchased. It is a 2001 Barchetta.
I finally received a call from a women who told me that they will not insur the car because of my daily driver. I need to "drive something more comparable." I asked her to tell me what that car would be. She told me a 2005 Mercedes.

I drive a 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 on a daily basis. I also have a Dodge Ram. Since I own manufacturing companies, I am in the downtown Los Angeles area the majority of the day. I sure as hell do not want to be driving a brand new Mercedes in the areas I am in 90% of the time. What does my daily driver have to do with anything, other than the fact that I have a daily driver.

I asked to talk with the owner of the company or I will stop insuring all of my vehicles with them. I still have not received any calls.

Is Hagerty the place to call?

hagerty all the way. I have never encountered anyone rude or impolite. i did have a claim (largish one on the vintage ferrari), and it went like "butter".
    Rates are good, too.

Hagerty is good as long as your daily driver is not an old junker.

Are there any Porsche Club of America guys here?

Their website lists that they are endorsed by PCA. Might be worth seeing if their membership is experienceing the same issues.

I am a member of PCA, since that was one of the requirements that Leland West has.

I would recommend contacting PCA's national office and telling them what is going on, and asking if they are hearing similar stories.

Based on the recent stories I have heard here on FChat:

Leland West is not receptive to new business, and seems to be wanting to shrink their number of policies-in-force. That could be for a number of reasons, I won't speculate on them.

I have Grundy for my "classic" cars and while they don't have milaege limits, I don't know the age of a car before they will insure it. They were the least expensive of the bunch for me.

I have Grundy for my 1995 F355. Better rate than Haggerty, no deductible, more liability coverage, and same restrictions.

This is what the issue is with Leland....the question is what does Hagerty and Leland consider a junker?

Grundy wants you to document no drivers under 25, and need to have daily driver for each driver.

I have several "daily drivers", but none worth as much as the Ferrari, even when new

Perhaps they are losing money on claims, eh. I read about AIG and their auto claims refusal policy shenaigans recently. The firm I worked for over the summer was mentioned in the WSJ article... it took THIRTEEN YEARS to get the clients' money from those hosers.

my hagerty policy also has zero deductible and has no mileage restriction. i can pick which liability i want, and the rate was better in my case.....it all varies by region, car value, driving record, and zip, i suppose...

I currently only have much less valuable vintage italian cars (fiats!) but I've used Hagerty on various cars for years. This time around, with a little persuasion, they allowed me to insure my '69 spider for less than $100 a year in the San Francisco area even though my "daily driver" is a '72 Fiat campervan! No mileage restriction, car must be garaged, and used for "pleasure" only, agreed value of (don't laugh)$5500. Made me give them my word I wouldn't need to drive the '69 as a backup if the '72 breaks down. Fine with me: I can commandeer my wife's boring, but new, Japanese car! Besides, I've had so many Fiats, and have access to so many parts, that there is little that could happen that I couldn't fix before the next morning.

I finally had received a phone call back from the owner of Leland West today.
He let me know that they do not like insuring expensive vehicles to people who have daily drivers that are older than 5 years old. Since the car I drive daily is a 1997 Land Rover Defender 90, that would not qualify me. In addition, since I recently purchased a Porsche 996 Turbo in addition to my Ferrari Barchetta, he highly doubted the fact that I would ever drive my Defender.

I explained that the other 6 cars I own are for pleasure driving, which is what there insurance covers, but he did not buy it. He explained that I should call my insurance company that covers my daily autos and add the Barchetta to that policy. It sounded like a polite way to say, get lost. I think these guys must have recently taken some big financial hits.

I let him know that in the near future I plan on also purchasing a Ferrari F40 and a Porsche Carrera GT. He really started to get nervous.

I guess I will be calling Grundy and Haggerty.
    thanks

See and people thought the Leland story was made up in the other thread. This post just adds to it.

I had the same deal happen to me when I was first trying to insure my 348. My then daily driver was too old, NOT!

    Leland Sucks.

All they want is for your car to rot in the garage, so they can continue to collect your money and never have to pay for anything.

I've had good luck with another company I haven't seen mentioned here - American National (www.anpac.com). They have what they call their Chrome program for collectible/exotic cars. Agreed value, reasonable limits and good customer service so far. Only downside is a high deductible - 5% of car's insured value. But they also have a program where if you go 3 years without a claim, each subsequent year you get a 25% refund check on your premiums. Might be worth a call.

I'm quite sure they don't care what your daily driver is. My daily driver is not even insured with them since it's a work truck registered to my business. They count my 1985 Corvette as a daily driver since one car has to be it.
