Is it just me or is Leigh Diffey as irritating to you as well. He just grates on me when he feels he has to start yelling. I've been trying to find an email address for someone at NBCSN to send my opinion to but can't find any way to contact them on their website.
Yes, the vocal crescendo at the start and finish of each race is pretty irritating. A lot of people here don't like Varsha, but he was no worse than Diffey, IMO.
Twitter. I prefer varsha but I'm not annoyed like you. I tend to tune out anyway and just watch the race and listen to radio dialog.
The race would be better if there were long periods of silence (except for the noise cars and crowds make) with a few choice words from Machett and Hobbs now and again--but the key, here, is long periods of silence from the "talking heads".
Diffey=Horrible. The only thing that could be worse for F1 in the US is if they brought back Derek Daley.
AND THE RED LIGHTS GO OUT AND WE ARE RACING AT.... I like the "let's ride along with driver X" because they usually just stop talking and show us the view from on board for a while.
He's on NBCSN which is as far as I know the only major broadcaster of F1 in America. (Some races I think go to FOX) He has this very childish, contrived, excited yelling when something he thinks is happening. It's all very girlish and juvenile. He raises his voice up to screaming levels and talks very fast and excitedly like we don't know what's going on, and somehow he thinks he's adding something to the scene. It's absolutely awful and he makes me cringe whenever he does it. Who here knows how to start an online petition to ask him to drop the screaming? I'm not savvy enough w/ online things like to know how to do it. I do not do Facebook or Twitter. Any takers?
He should take lessons at the very least from Varsha, who was/is much better, and way more sophisticated at commentating. Yes is is an Aussie, but that has nothing to do w/ his style or lack thereof. He makes a mockery of F1.
Some come from the Paul Page School of Broadcasting where they learn if they speak LOUDLY ENOUGH, some how it adds to the drama and excitement of event, even if what they're saying is complete nonsense. Recently started watching the Sky Sports F-1 broadcasts streaming online here. They've got a good team (even though I'm no Martin Brundle fan, at least he competed in a fairly recent era) along with Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill. They give the broadcasts some gravitas as a least a couple of these guys have race wins and even a World Championship to their credits. BHW
I do not care for the sound of Diffey's voice. The American coverage (and at this point even the bbc) cannot even compare to Sky coverage. Try to download the Sky coverage on stop torturing yourself with Diffey.
Diffey is excited when he broadcasts anything he does. He did some of the winter olympics (NBC) and it was the same stuff. the producers at NBC must like his shtick. Best
I agree, Diffey makes it difficult to watch F1 these days. I would hope the station finds someone new soon.
Australia doesn't want him, keep him over there. We get the sky commentators during the race in Australia and it is pretty good.
I remember the first time I heard his shrill "And now Charles Pic is making a move on Max Chilton for P 16!!!!!" as if Michael Jordan had just made a game winning shot in the NBA finals. Having said that, he has a good head for the sport, just not a voice for it.
I've got no issue with Diffey. Much prefer him to Varsha, who IMO had somewhat of a know-it-all attitude and lacked any excitement whatsoever. I also like Hobbs and Matchett.
