As many of us have dealt with the junk trunk straps Ferrari uses in our cars which have broken to hold the toolkit and air compressor, I set off to repair mine on my 458 with new good looking high quality leather straps and new rivets.

The leather straps are actually a very high quality leather dog collar from Amazon, and then I bought a rivet gun set from Amazon as well. You need to use the rivets form the extra rivet set I bought which are long enough to penetrate the thick leather dog collar and the trunk.

I drilled out the old rivets to remove them and then in a close location to not reuse the same holes, I drilled new holes and then used a rivet gun to install the new rivets.

I bought two dog collars and cut them both in half, with one set used for the left and other side for the right in the trunk. I drilled small holes through the dog collar locations as well where I planned to rivet them into the trunk.

link below of the specific dog collar and rivet gun I used for anyone interested in a similar project. All in all this took me about an hour in my garage.

There is some company selling new straps for $140, which is a rip off as these $22 dog collars do a superb job and the buckles look great.

Dog collar: $22 each. Buy two in black size XL: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09FXTRRVT?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

    Rivet gun: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B083S9LMLH?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Rivets set (the one that comes with the rivet gun are too small for the thick leather dog collar): https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08QRRJZFD?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

    Photos…

Don’t mind the mess from the wires in the center…those are from my Scuderia Audio system. Need to find some good way to cover/wrap them that looks good.

Would you elaborate on the process? I’m getting ready to do this too.
    Did you remove the tub?
Could you get to the metal strips behind the tub? Bend the tub out to get Behind it?
    Any gotchas? Hints?

I did not remove the tub. I just drilled out the rivets and they came out. On the drivers side I didn’t hit any metal plate but on the passenger side I had to move my drill and put the new holes in a different location because for whatever reason it was impossible to drill new holes through the metal plate. If I removed the tub I could have more easily gotten to the metal plate and did a cleaner job, but I was too lazy to go through that level of effort!
