The leather steering wheel on my Daytona is in pretty bad shape. Who are people using to have their leather steering wheels restored/rel-eathered.

Thanks for any recommendation and/or comment you might have.

I recommend no one, no one pours the hardened foam. Each restorer disaapoints, even after I go into my speach what I exactly need.

    Well Tom,

If the foam is in tact who would you recommend to re-leather the wheel.

Someone mentioned or I believe I had seen a post about a gentleman in FL who people have had good luck with.

PS: I have an e-mail in to you regarding some vent glass if you get a chance to look at it.

    Regards,

    Drew Altemara

Sometimes if the leather has dried and faded then a redye is possible,
but I'll bet you've probably considered that option.

The leather is in real bad shape to the point where it has worn through in certain spots.

I will have to assess the condition of the inner foam. I hadn't thought about the foam until I saw Tom's post about the inner hard foam.

Buy a new Momo wheel. They made the original and they know how. It will last 20 years even if in sun half the day (with care.) Leather cleaner works fine but start in on the first month. Sadle soap is hard to beat! Virtually no one can repair an original when there are holes or broken stiches. If you find a leather worker so blessed as to do a fine repair job; PLEASE tell us.

I have had my daytona steering wheel restored, but even after two tries, I am still not happy with the restoration. I sent the wheel to that gentleman in Florida who does the restorations, heard this long story about how bad the foam was and how he had to rebuild it...when the wheel returned, it was poorly covered and very skinny. I sent it back and had it redone, the leather was much better but it was still skinny. I would recommend that if your wheel is the proper size and all you need is a redye, to do that. Otherwise, make sure you are close to whoever is restoring it...everyone has their own idea of how the wheel should turn out. :(

Also be prepared to wait for some time. It seems these guys have more work to do than they can do.

    Coachi,

This is for a Daytona steering wheel. I suspect that is what you had re-done.

Mine definately needs to be recovered. But the hard foam looks pretty good.

In that case would you recommend just having him re-leather it with the existing foam?

Also, how long did it take for him to do the wheel?

    Thanks,

    Drew Altemara

Yes I have two daytonas and I had decided to restore one of the steering wheels...when I sent it to Agla, I thought wll it would need was recovering, when they removed the existing leather, they told me the foam underneath was in terrible shape and had to be redone. It took him six weeks the first time, less time than that when he redid it, maybe three; the leather looks great...just dont have him mess with the foam. I ever found a spare steering wheel on EBay that has a crack in one of the mtal spoke and I used it till my other wheel was returned. Now if someone could restore the metal pokes, I would send that one for restoration. The name of the company is AGLA in florida and I remember a gentleman by the name of alan whose last name I forgot...he is the owner, advertises in cavallino etc... cost about 500 dollars for the restoration.

I believe AGLA is more known for leather shifter boot covers (?). He can recreate any boot from a sample and has done good work for me. Turn around time is slooow. I am not sure if I would use AGLA for a wheel restoration. I would call Gary at http://www.bobileff.com

I was at his shop yesterday in San Diego and it was amazing to see what he was working on in anticipation of Pebble Beach.
