There are also pictures of an eight wheelers Ferrari (four separate front wheels ala Tyrrell and four separate ones on the rear) but that was a hoax, set up by Ferrari mechanics.

I'm guessing this was only a temporary mod for a test and after they saw that it was pointless they restored the car back to original.

I believe there was also a 6 wheel Williams.

Yes, but the williams had the extra wheels in the back, unlike the Tyrrel. The are miniatures in 1/43 acale from both cars, Mattel has the Ferrari and Minichamps has the williams.

It seems there have been quite a few 6 wheeled cars over the years:

(And the 8 wheeled Ferrari at the bottom was a Factory hoax made by placing the extra wheels and wings carefully up against a static car on a race track to make it look real)

I bet this would have been far better at preventing cars behind from passing rather than offering any real improvement to lap time!
