Finished my engine out "major", so the final "part VIII" of the video saga is now on Youtube. Everything ran perfect except for a slow oil drip from the front crank shaft oil seal, which drove me crazy, so I replaced it (yeah, that was real easy.....). It's now drip free. I made several changes in the instalation proceedure for the second seal go-around. Anyone replacing the seal on their car, check out the video and maybe you'll get it drip free the first time out:

Old thread, but I used the search feature...

When the crank seal was done the second time, was the front cover pulled again or is it possible to replace it without pulling the cover?

I was wondering if there was any super secret magical way to use the Force to pull the seal without pulling the cover, but I guess not.

On some cars you can sometimes carefully drill a small hole in the seal, thread a screw into the hole and then remove the seal with a pair of angled needle nose pliers.

If that is possible on this engine I am not sure.

Yeah, I wasn't looking to pull the front cover when I change my belts in the next few weeks, but the seal is leaking and I think I'll just pull it and everything else that needs to come off to do it.

A PITA, but it does allow you to check the condition of those ridiculous plastic rubbing blocks. Pulling the front cover off wouldn't be quite so bad if it didn't involve removing the oil pan too, which requires removing the shift linkage parts, etc., etc, etc. Like a damn puzzle!

Thanks for another in your series of great videos.

I have used clear packing tape over the edge that the seal needs to go over in the past to prevent damage to the lip. A drop of oil on the tape push the seal over and remove the tape once the seal is seated. It doesn't take much to scratch the lip.
I also always put a little sealant around the outside of the seal. I have seen too many weap a little around the edge.
