I am trying to make a stencil to re-letter the airbox on my '88 3.2. It seems, from the faint image that is still left on the box, that my car only has the "Ferrari" logo on the box, without the minute lettering to the right that I have seen on others. To that end, I found the "Ferrari"font on the web, downloaded it to MS Word and properly sized the stencil to fit the airbox. Now comes the tough part: Do I take the time to carefully cut it out with an Exacto knife or hot stencil cutter on plastic or does anyone have a laser cutter they could use to cut out the stencil if I send them the file? That way maybe we could all have at least part of the airbox stencil for modest cost. The font can also be enlarged for lettering on door sill plates and such. Or I could just bite the bullet and buy the stencil of the 'bay for $20 or so. Not trying to be cheap (well maybe I am, lol!) but I figured there has to be a better way to cut this design than spending a couple of hours with a sharp blade and maybe make the stencil available to more members here too. I don't think you'll get the desired results with an exacto knife. I would just order one from ebay, they're only about $10.
I know, but $25 for a piece of cardboard makes me think there must be a better way. Just under $25 with shipping Ferrari 308 328 Airbox Restoration Lettering Stencil | eBay I guess I will order one. We can still share it. A few other members also need to use it and I can pass around the F Chat community for a small capital recovery fee, lol! Alden
I ordered this template years ago but it turned out bad. You really have to make sure its tightly fitted on the air box by using a temp adhesive on the template, or the paint will seep through which is what mine looked like. I ended up repainting the box black and sticking a Cavallino on it. Cheers Image Unavailable, Please Login
I ordered the stencil on ebay here is my post http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/mondial/484524-stencil-air-intake-cover.html its plastic precision cut its two piece took me couple tries Tips use light coat 3M glue to create tackiness to hold stencil (spray on wait about minute before use) 1 very light coat of paint wait for paint to dry before removing stencil repeat once dry use blade to "scape" away bleeding
hi mr franzen, i just offered to chip in and share the cost with alden via PM, but would happily purchase that one from you and pass on even to the next poor sap, with say a 30% discount each time it moves on - as it gets congealed with paint and needs a clean.
ok sorted, then after ill pass it on to Alden for pennies, everyones a winner. Well, apart from the guy selling the stencils. BTW your engine bay looks lovely and the chrome donkey idea also looks like it was meant to be
There's a fair amount of info on airbox re-lettering 308/328 section, such as in http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/308-328/376869-airbox-stencil.html The gist seems to be that the stencil approach is iffy but reasonable results can be achieved, but that the best quality results from silk-screening, particularly using the (relatively expensive) service provided by Italian Auto Parts: Ferrari parts, Ferrari lights, Ferrari horns, Ferrari license plate frames, Ferrari keychains, Ferrari washer pump, Ferrari car covers, Ferrari dash covers, Ferrari gate vault, Ferrari air box I bought one of the e-bay stencils, but am still not sure whether to (a) try the stencil, (b) pay the $250 or so to Italian Car Parts for a concourse-quality re-lettering, (c) make my own silk-screen, or (d) just leave the airbox alone.
