Hi everyone, I am new to this board and want to show off some photos of my newest toy. My uncle Gennarro sold his house here in San Diego and moved back to his home town of Ponza Italy. I was fortunate enough to have the oportunity to purchase the car from him. The car is a 1976 model and its motivated by a 1.8 liter Fiat engine. He installed the fuel injection from a 1980 Fiat 124 Spyder. This helped gain some horsepower and made getting it smogged a little easier. The car has European bumpers and headlights. I really like the way the car looks but its performance has a lot to be desired. I'm currently repacing all the suspension bushings and shocks. Next I would like to add a turbo.

Does anyone have any info on what size turbo, where to get a manifold, and will the L-jettronic fuel injection be fine for 7-8 pounds of boost?

    Thanks for your help
    Aldo

Easiest thing to do would be to locate a Fiat spyder 2000 turbo engine, or at least the propietary parts.

Your car looks nice, every time i google turbo scorpion your car comes up. Im assuming your running a small T3. What exhaust manifold are you using? At what rpm does your turbo achieve maximum boost?..Do you have overheating problems?

Its funny that you suggested an LS1. My other car is a 93 RX7 with a 2002 Z06 engine in it. I was the first person to put a 2002 LS1 in an older car smog legally. The evap system took me weeks to adapt to the older car. So I do have some experience with engine swaps. Swaping a front-wheel drive, transverse mounted ls1 in a mid engine car will NOT be smog legal unfortunatly. The scorpion will still have to pass smog every two years.

Custom built Stainless manifold, down pipe and exhaust. I still have the jig. T3-60 is the biggest I could fit in the area I wanted to place it. Boost is smooth. Have it set or 12 lbs. Depending on load boost starts as low as 2500, peaks at about 5000, with plenty of huff at redline in 5th..... wish I had a sixth gear. Top ended it with stock gearing from a Zagato at around 128 mph. Dyno's at 185 rear wheel HP and 200 ftlbs of tourque. No overheating. It's intercooled and have an oil cooler and an auxilary readiator, all with thermostatically controlled electric fans.

Jeff, you're not really selling your Scorpion, are you...?

Congratulations, Aldo, on your "new" Scorpion. Drive it in good health.

welcome aldo! wondering when i would see you out here. it is great that jerry's car survives in the family and that you will enjoy her!

way to go! consider going the normally aspirated direction and have fun with the build. no reason not to consider an engine swap like an alfa 2 liter or a fiat 2 liter? you have not been afraid of the swap in the past...give it some thought!

    best,

    pcb

    Hi Peter,
As of right now the car is getting bushings and shocks. Then I'm going to touch up the interior. I started this thread to collect information on whether or not I could use a small turbo with the factory injection. The few turbo scorpions that I have found on-line are running after market injection or carburetors, and are heavily modified. I did not want to heavily modify the car because I still need to pass smog every two years. So, I'm still undecided on wether or not I'm going to go through with the turbo idea.

If you guy are planning to upgrade from 1.8 to 2.0 ltr. engine for the Scorpion, make sure you use the Lancia 2.0 NOT the Fiat 2.0

Fiat has alot of issues, modification requires to the block before it can make it to work for the Scorpion.

Lancia 2.0 is almost a straight swap with only maybe one major mod to the block. Believe me I've done this so many times.

Why would the swap not be legal I wonder? It's a newer engine, thus if you keep all of the smog equipment of the newer engine you should be OK I would think. then again, I'm in MD, not Kalifornia... not that we don't have smog nazis, they just aren't quite so zealous. In any case, I know of Fieros with transplanted Northstars that smog... hey, there's an idea for that Scorpion!

I'm a little rusty (and old), but I use to work for Peter Satori, an Italian car dealership (Ferraris, Fiat, Lancia, Alfas) in the 70s and I thought that the 124 Spider was offered with a factory turbo at the end of the car's era. Am I all wet? Is this an alternative? I raced 124 Sport Coupes at that time in B Sedan and qualified for the Runoffs 6 years in a row. Just trying to clean the cob webs out.

The laws here are nuts. You can not put a newer truck engine in an older car, because the truck engine was never federalized for passenger vehicles. You can not use adustable fuel pressure regulators. The catalytic converters can not be moved. You must use the factory intake or an after market one approved by the BAR(Bureau of automotive repair.) You must transfer all of the evap emissions equipment from the doner vehicle. Im not sure why you cant put a new front wheel drive engine in an older mid engine car. I do know that MR2 owners have atempted engine swaps here in the communist state of califonia with little success because of the strict laws.

Your right a few Fiat 124 spiders were available with turbos. The spider however is front engine rear wheel drive. The scorpion is mid engine with the a transversly mounted transmission. From what i read if you use a spider turbo manifold on a scorpion it places the turbo right where the scorpions cv boot and shaft will be.

Strange... then again, it is Kalifornia. Still, I can't imagine that, if all emission related items were swapped, including the ECM that it wouldn't be legal. Then again, I am using logic here, eh?

apollo7 how does that pass smog? Does the engine just need to have all the vette stuff and you are legal? You actually have a BAR label for that conversion? If you can do that why can't ferraris with cis kjectronic update to motronic or other EMS?
