This looks like an F1 car with the Gas tanks on the outside next to the driver? I,m sure there are a few people on here who know, Thanks in advance. Gavin

It's called the D50. Famous cars, driven by the likes of Fangio and Ascari.

This car was the Lancia contender for the f1 championship but than, theyr main driver (Alberto Ascari) died, and Lancia abandoned the project (i think there where some financial issues also) and Ferrari took over the chassis and the whole project.....they used the chassis with minor changes and Fangio won the 56 title with it.

Lancia, primarily an innovative road going car manufacturer, had financial problems and the death of Ascari (ironically - having been a Ferrari driver and having left to go to Lancia) trying out a Ferrari 750 Monza at Monza was the final straw. Fiat took over Lancia and gave the cars to Ferrari (never have quite understood the politics of that).

Not only did Ferrari gain a car that was much superior to their own current Supersqualo but they regained the services of the noted engineer/designer Vittorio Jano who had worked with Enzo when he ran the pre-war Alfa Romeo racing team. Jano went on to design the Dino V6 engines which had great racing success.

I would disagree that under Ferrari ownership the D50 only had minor changes. Quite a lot of the Jano innovative features were removed

Correct, "minor" was a form of expression, not the best one i agree. One of the things that changes where the "side tanks", While a Lancia, they where separated from the main body of the car but than Ferrari chganged trhat making them a part of the whole car.

But still an impressive and very successful car, whether badged Ferrari or Lancia.

As far as I recall there is one original still existing in a museum and a couple or more recreations running on track, which I have been lucky enough to see.

Eight cars/chassis D50 have been built by Lancia racing department in the period '54/'55 and seven of them have been transferred on July 26,1955 to the Scuderia Ferrari after the withdrawal of Lancia from motor racing.
As well known the D50 won the 1956 F1 world championship as Ferrari with J.M.Fangio

Two original cars are still existing :
ch.#0001 : owned by Lancia Museum (Fiat property), the only never transferred to Ferrari
ch.#0004 : owned by the National Automobile Museum of Torino

A recent strange story of a finding of some original engines has given rise to the construction of some recreation/replicas.

    Ciao

    Andrea

Don't know which car is this one .

The logic for having the engine offset like the below scheme, was to obtain a sensible lowering of the center of mass. This scheme ensured a lower position of the driver's, allowing the placement of the transmission shaft, aside the pilot's seat.
Furthermore, the moving of the gearbox and the transmission on the rear axle, gave to the car a perfect distribution of the weights.

    Ciao

Thank you. I understand the logic but was this design unique to Lancia ?

I cannot find any other examples of this set up.

The last iteration of this "model" the side tanks were actually empty and the actual tanks had been relocated to the tail of the car.

The drivers of the day were not used to cars so quickly changing direction and the resulting nervousness. Possibly due to roll centre heights, wire wheels, etc. and having the fuel tanks at the rear meant the handling was more like they were used to.

Basically Jano's car was too ahead of the time in regards to getting all the mass between the axles.

I suspect that contemporary tire design limited the benefits of such a set up.

The last iteration of this model was 1957's 801. This had the side tanks completely removed and featured 4 exhaust pipes each side, grouped together.
