Leafing through a 1988 issue of Autocar I found an amusing article about the 1000 BHP Testarossa Bi-Turbo by Koenig. At least one of these mad, bad monsters must have been built as a demo - but were there any follow-up orders?

Did anyone on F-Chat ever drive one, or indeed see one? I've always been curious to know how it actually goes in real life, and how long does it last before the engine goes "KA-BANG!!!" (which seems inevitable with 200 Bhp/litre...).

Wolfgang, you're the Testarossa expert... any info?

    Andrea,

yes we sadly know this horrible König-Testa.
A dear friend from Heiko owns such a 1.000PS beast.
There are some pics here at fchat and also some video files from 2002, driving together to the Racing Days.
Its unbelievable fast.....but most time in the garage!
Gear box repair for the "xy" time.
To me it looks soooo ugly:(

Andrea, I recently saw one for sale. I'll see if I can find the advert again.

Does any body remember the poster in the 80's for an oil comapny with the cutaway drawing of the 1000hp Koenig Testarossa? If you've got a copy post it.

    Cheers
    Simon

Andrea, the Koenig is F**** fast. I had the possibility to drive with that beast in 2002 (yes, the same car that Wolfgang has mentioned). But besides the problem with the huge torque (there is no testa gear box that can compend such forces) you also can't really use the power.

The guy who owns this car never blows it up above 700 hp cause you can't drive it any more (traction problem). The car's power can be controlled with a "steam-wheel" which changes the pressure of the turbos.

Here are some pics I took in 2002...

I used to have a poster of that on my wall as a teenager. Next to one of a white countach. They got dumped for Sam Fox and Linda Lusardi and sadly I now have none of the above.

I have the original brochure for it somewhere in storage. I remember a conversation with one of the better Ferrari techs in the USA saying that it was quick for about 3 minutes, then something else would break.

The "kit" was never properly developed...

Interesting info, thanks! What I find surprising is that everyone keeps mentioning gearbox problems and driveability problems - but no ENGINE problems!! Can the modified Testa engine really take so much power without trouble? It seems incredible.

At the Monterey "Concorso Italiano" show I met a guy with a twin-turbo Lamborghini Diablo conversion: 800 BHP, 370 Km/h and all the usual monster performance. But many people at Monterey also told me that a few years ago there were several such twin-turbo Diablos in the USA, but one by one they all went "BANG" and most owners eventually rebuilt the engines to standard, non-turbo specs.

With this knowledge, can we actually say that the Boxer 12 is a stronger engine than the Lambo V12??? (or at least that we can say that the Ferrari gearbox "protects" the 12-cylinder by falling apart before the engine does... ;-)) )???

    Andrea,
the gearbox & differencial problems with the testa are well know. Each testa gearbox/differencial is going down at around 50.000km and needs a serious (expensive) repair. For sure with better parts and no more problems for the future.

    Andrea,
and yes, the engine is good for over 200.000km without any big revision - just the usual services.
Well, I have done only 15.000km during my first testa year, sometimes pushing tup to 9.500rpm`s - no problem for this wonderful engine!
The engine is NOT the problem - its the gearbox (2nd & 5th gear) and the differencial.
