I bought a repro set of key blanks for my 83 QV, but cannot find a locksmith that is willing to cut them. Are these difficult for locksmiths? They look pretty easy to do. Any recommendations on where to get them cut? Thx in advance!

I am very surprised at your problem. I took my blanks into a locksmith and they didn't blink an eye.

The keys are not hard to cut.

It may be that there is a reluctance to cut steel blanks compared to brass blanks because steel is harder on the cutting wheel, but steel blanks are common.

I bought some allegedly for F 308 locks from the States .
The local ( Uk ) key cutter was a bit miffed as he said he could have supplied a pair .
He recognised they were old fashioned 70.s blanks .
Anyhow I said charge the full rate so s not to do him out of his profit margin .
They were about 0.5 mm to long so with out guarantee and with my permission he trimmed off a bit from the tip .

    Anyhow they work fine .

Find an old school key cutter and “make him an offer he can’t refuse “

I know of two cutters here in Nor Cal who did an excellent job cutting duplicates. In total, I had 4 sets of keys cut, two for my 308 and two for my Mondial. All of them work well.

Also, the keysmiths I used had blanks in stock.

Any hardware store that sells key blanks can.

Now, the reluctance WILL come into play if the key or blank have a special, usually enlarged 'presentation' covering over the 'handle' part of the key.

Some/many key cutting machines are not made to accommodate that scenerio. Many of the 'presentation keys' have been ruined because of that.

If you want one of those done and done right, you MAY have to 'shop around.'

    Good Luck.

See this is the problem keys are not duplicated from the tip the are duplicated from the Key stop (the part of the key that hits the ignition when you inserted)so the length of the key is not important a good locksmith will copy from that point only.but some of the older cutting machines are not made that way so the have to go from the tip, so the have to trim the Key length so it is the same as the original from the tip to the stop.

I went to a random local locksmith... He searched the rack for a couple mins, found the blanks, cut the keys.
