Hi All , I am new to this forum and in fact new to the Ferrari brand. Today I placed an order for a Rosso corsa portofino with a few bits and bobs. My car will be ready March 2020. I am coming from a very “full” Mercedes history (AMG GT, CLS ,etc ) initially I was planning to buy a 16 reg California T however after test driving the Portofino I fell in love with it and decided to go with it. Now I wanted to ask you all about merits of buying a new Portofino, as it will certainly depreciate heavily (am I correct to assume £90k in 3 years?) and wanted to know if I made a right choice of buying a new one rather than waiting till low mileage used ones come out around the same time of my car’s delivery. Thank you all Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
the car doesn't arrive for a year....worry about it 90 days out. Not now. If you want to back out, back out. And depreciation vs your previous MB?...you must not be that afraid of losing money. We have owned a few AMGs..brutal resale.
Did you want one new, with options exactly how you wanted it? If not, if you’re not in any rush, if you don’t care that someone else drove it (possibly hard), then go used. If you want to spec it, get the model, get the photos, enjoy the anticipation, know you’re the “only” driver (they get driven ~50 miles in Italy during the testing phase) then go new! We all could be dead in a few years time...
When you are coming from AMG, the depreciation is actually amazing on Ferrari's. You will love it in the value standpoint. Not sure how soon and how you want the car, buying a few hundred miles Portofino off the lot is not a bad idea since Portofino doesn't have loaded of options that you can choose from.
Welcome - as others have noted you should see better depreciation on your Portofino but yes it will depreciate but current evidence is not 50 % over three years - see prices for similar 2016 T now - also you have a few months to change your spec to something more personal and/or see how the first few cars are coming through - if necessary just before your build is locked you could get a lightly used car instead but I doubt in a year's time it will show much if any saving from list
Wow. thank you all for the replies. Stupid depreciation of AMG compared to Ferrari was one of the aspects that surprised me too. I lost over 55% on my AMG GTS in 3 years. And when I test drove the portofino i decided that if I am going to loose money it better be on a car like this (AMG GT is also great but not as refined or practical or pretty) I guess I am not used to waiting for a car fo a year . I will keep my order and see how it goes closer to the time. I have more questions regarding my spec and essential options that I will post separately. There are many threads similar to this already so it might be worth looking to see if you find existing answers and/or comments to serve as a foundation
Thank you I will certainly first have a look and then post the remaining questions Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I know it doesn't really make financial sense to buy new but there's something special about ordering and specifying a brand new car. I hated but at the same time loved the anticipation of the long wait for our Portofino that arrived last August (September registration in the UK). You also know a brand new car hasn't been thrashed, crashed or abused etc.... Depreciation is an interesting point, having sold my McLaren 650S Spider I know all about that! My friend had a lot of trouble and lost a lot on his AMG GTS as there are so many for sale. I have owned many Mercedes over many, many years and they are great cars but the Mercedes brand has become mainstream with so many models starting at a relatively low price point. My "keep for ever" car is a Mercedes SL55 AMG which we have owned for some 8 years and it now coming back up in value, a little. I know the Portofino will depreciate but I hope not as much as others.
I have only built 2 of my 7 Ferrari's, and I can understand if it is your first Ferrari, but I'd never do it again. I tend to get a car figure out what wrong with it and then change it. My California T (which I bought at a about half of sticker) got a piggy back unit and Capristo exhaust (much more power in than a Porto and it sounds amazing), my GTS was also bought at about half of sticker, has both a ECU (around 620 hp now) and transmission flash (shifts about 30% faster). No disrespect to the Porto, but outside of the interior being more modern looking the car did not feel that much different to me when driven the way I would drive them. The problem with the GTS (I have said this before) is that the car was misunderstood and underappreciated. A lot of typical MB customers thought is was a hardtop SL, it is not. You don't fit in that car very well if you on the wide side, and it rides like a sports car not a GT car. Also MB's traction controls are set too sensitive, you need to turn them off to truly drive the car, and that can be scary if you are not used to a car electronics saving you.
Depreciation on my new 2017 Cali T HS was 25% in one year. The Portofino will depreciate similarly I am sure. You can get a 2017 or 2016 Cali T for $100k less than a new Portofino and you can have it now. You will not suffer a $65k depreciation event as I did when you sell it. Later you can get a Portofino on the used market. We test drove one and having just sold my 2017 Cali T HS I had a direct comparison and while the Portofino had some better aspects, I don't think it was that much better. My wife has an AMG GT C Roadster which we bought at a nice discount in January because it was a 2018 leftover but it's fully spec'd and she loves it. It's a very sporty car and not what I would have expected at all from MB but it's a pleasant surprise.
You can get '15/'16 CaliT's for Sub $150k which is a heck of a value. If you want something special, or have to be the only driver, or don't care about the money, then order. Otherwise find something optioned the way you want and buy one a year or 2 old and save 20-30%.
Was in same situation and so got a Cali t for a year while waiting for the Porto to turn up... if you get the Cali t like me then you will always still want the Porto ! Cars like this aren’t logical choices and ordering a brand new Ferrari surely has to fit in a bucket list for those of us that grew up with them on our walls! Congratulations! I just ordered my first Ferrari, a 2020 Portofino, two weeks ago. Went with Grigio Alloy and Blu Sterling interior color!
Very nice spec. I went for Rosso corsa for mine as it is my first Ferrari and I am a bit of a red car “fan” but your spec is gorgeous did you also go AFS ?and electric mirror? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Elec mirror were default in the Uk. Afs- no- she’s only coming out in the sunshine!! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Very nice spec indeed. I meant electrochromatic mirrors they are not standard in the UK Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Not 50%, but it will depreciate $90k. That's inline with the Cali T now. Actually, 2 year Cali T's are almost down $90k, but a big piece of that is the Portofino. The next iteration of the Portofino will probably be announced in 2020.
If you are ready for a Portofino before 2020 and your spec is pretty much standard options, then why wait? There are a number of Portofino's for sale at the moment but many are not advertised. There are a couple on Autotrader, but also the official dealers have cars for sale, which they are not allowed to advertise yet. There are a number of dealer demos that will also come up for sale too. If I wanted a Portofino now and did not want to wait I'd ring all the UK dealers with the spec I was after and I'm sure in a couple of months you would get pretty much what you are after.
Algar has a couple of them right now including a really nice black one. I am not usually a fan of black cars, but for some reason I think the Porto looks best in black.
I don't know where you are located OP, or what dealer you went to but Ferrari tends to makes changes to what options cars have during the model run. Keep that in mind if you truly plan to wait a year for your to be built. When I built my cars it was when my build slot came up, I guess they are now doing things differently.
