Do any Houston Fchat members go to his services or watch him on tv? Todays sermon was just as good as those in the past but I really want to go see him.

I attended Lakeway a number of times while undergoing training at FoHouston. It was right after his dad had passed away and he was just beginning. Fact is, I went to the first service on which they began having two services a day at the old location.

Joel is good but seems more of a cheerleader than really delving into what the Bible says about things. Very positive and motivating and that is what a lot of people need who are going through tough times....

I remember watching Mr.Osteen back in the day and I see alot of him in Joel. Joel is forging his own path in a way that connects with people in a more realistic venue/perception. A preacher man/woman can recite scripture from the book all they like yet isn't it simply about making a connection?

Regardless my intent was just to share.

John Osteen had his own style which was really quite different from Joel. Joel has a very good demeanor and a way of presenting his message in a very positive way. Many people do not like him because they feel he chooses to leave out all the hellfire and brimstone messages that are preached in lots of pulpits. He brings a message of possibilities in a very positive way.

Do not get me wrong. I like Joel but just wish he would bring out more scripture references to back up the message he is bringing.

Been watching both him and his father since I was little. I feel he is kind of an excellent person to introduce large numbers of new Christians to the bible and church in general. I actually regularly listen to about 4 different church's online. A really good one I like that is a little more scripture based is Austin stone in Austin Texas. Everything is online. I went there when I went to UT.

Unfortunately I did not attend saturday and instead went with my mother out of town to see my aunt who is not doing well health wise. It was a last minute decision and I really want to go with my mother anyway. I feel bad but I know Joel would understand.

I tried calling you Eric but could not leave a voicemail, your phone just rang and rang? I have joined the ministry and applied for a few volunteer positions aswell but I wanted you to know why I was not there. I have a few applications out to various sheriffs offices that could take me out of the county but it is a nice to know I can catch the sermons on tv.

Its a major refresh. I enjoy his style. And reflects the Gospel very well, many of his sermons are based on just a handful of Scriptures. Simple, uplifting, and always brings a smile to my face.

Also most of the people who enjoy and want the "hellfire and brimstone messages" are old school and that is what they where raised on thus that is why they miss them, the old adage about "Old dogs and new tricks" if I may.

Bob Dylan said many many moons ago "These times are a-changin" and imho in a more positive way. It would be nice if a group of us in Houston could form some sort get together once a month and attend a sermon and then go have an early lunch or something together.

Like I said, I attended Lakewood at the old location while I was training at FoH. We attend Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas here in the Metroplex. It too has the feeling of a loving God who is quick to forgive and full of grace. Not a hellfire and brimstone delivery at all. 3 scriptures to back up the message.............The senior pastor is Robert Morris, author of The Blessed Life...........

Gateway is blessed to have grown from 19 members to over 22,000 now in the past 12 years. 26 pastors on staff and 7 rotating worhip teams. And the teaching is very encouraging......DFW has Gateway and Robert Morris and Houston has Lakewood and Joel Osteen.......two very dynamic, growing and encouraging churches.....and leaders...

Not trying to hijack the thread but I thought the people around the metroplex might like to know there is a place in Southlake that is inviting, welcoming and comfortable..........Come visit if in the area.....

No hijack at all Sir and I greatly appreciate your input. I guess I could have made this a generic thread as that would have been more appropriate. Even if I do not attend on a weekly or bi-weekly basis I explained to my family that without them there with me it would just not be or feel the same but certainly that can be overcome.

    My humorous side:
I should hangout with BigTex one saturday night and then perform my best Rooster impression at 5am followed by a "Guess what we are doing this morning Honey, my fellow sinner!"

Of course I will have to dodge 'lead' but it is the thought that counts, right?

Dude, I worship Presbyterian, Methodist and Lutheran, and ONE Easter, attended all three!
    :D :D :D :D

No small feat, given they are in three cities..Jersey Village (Foundry), downtown Houston (Trinity), and Texas City (1st Presby)

I found something I could use, and always do!

We did work on the first Osteen Church, about the time they were powering up the first broadcast links...that was a long time ago, now.

I went to see Joel when he had A Night of Hope in San Diego. The guy is amazing. Very inspirational! I study the bible through many different sources (much like going to a university & having different professors with different teaching styles). Joel keeps my energy up to keep pushing on. I would attend with y'all if I was in the area... alas I'm in Hell California.

These are the Sermons from the church I attend in Austin. I know this isnt Osteen related but I still think some may like them. They work really well with Apple products. Little more scripture based but very good energy as all the pastors are young.

Ya know I must still be lost in translation, allow me to explain my confusion.

I have always felt the hand of God on my shoulder (my life was spared after my motorcycle accident) and I actually had my prayers answered one day yet I still have that mentality of "God will not pay my bills", I struggle with that perception everyday. I still find it difficult to put my burdens on a belief, have I become a victim of society? I do not think I have as I would not have started this topic but the struggle ie weight is sometimes almost too heavy to carry.

I understand your confusion. I struggled with about the same thing for years. God does not want to do everything for us. That is why he made us characters of free will. God will open doors for us but he will not push us through them. If we are to accomplish anything he will help us in our endeavors but it is up to us to do what is necessary to accomplish them. Pay our bills? He could.....Send someone to pay something for us, money mysteriously show up, an investment suddenly accelerate greatly, an inheritance or any of many other things... But he wants us to do our part. And he does it in strange ways. He may give us something small to do and we see it through. After all, if we cannot be faithful in the small things how can we expect for Him to give us more?

No, it is not by works that we are saved, but by His grace. But He does want us to accept the responsibility that goes along with the grace that he extends to us and do things that will accomplish good things. And the nice thing is that he is there every step of the way even when we do not feel His presence.....

Wow, how did we get on this and off of Joel Osteen? Joel does talk about the possibilities that are there if we a true believers and I choose to believe what he preaches in that regard......

You just have to know Kari. She is the sweetest young lady you could ever hope to meet and has a heart that is huge. Her personality is wonderful. We have known Kari and her family since she was about 10 and watch her music improve and mature through time. She is now a double Dove award winner and travels the world making personal appearances. Her voice is truly annointed and really brings the whole place into a feeling of worship.
