I saw those six wheel Terrell's race back at the time (On TV). That was early in my F1 fandom. First season was the Hunt/Lauda contest, and I was hooked! I did not know he collected so many of his cars!
I saw Jody in the P34 battle James Hunt in the M23 at Watkins Glen in 1976. A fantastic race, Hunt P1, Jody P2. Niki somewhat recovered from his near death injuries to finish 3rd. An heroic drive--truly epic.
I don't know how long ago he bought his cars but after F1 he launched a very successful firearms simulator training company and did very well out of it.
had a successful (for a while) organic farm that closed at the end of last year, too https://gff.co.uk/articles/2024/01/laverstoke-owner-cites-soaring-costs-as-cause-for-buffalo-dairy-closure/
Yes, I didn't mention the "biggest small-holding in the world" as I assumed that the arms stuff had been far more profitable. LOL.
He supposedly made $200,000,000 (in 1996 dollars) from the sale of his shares in FTS. I'm guessing it might be hard to top that from organic farm-to-table efforts but what do I know? I've never been an arms dealer or a farmer! Heck, I'm not even sure where the "produce" aisle is.
Really great video, especially when he talks about the '79 season and how he and Gilles were so different. It's a bit sad that he's selling them all tbh, he still looks in good health and certainly seems sharp.
Here's a great story about Jody and Gilles from Sports Car Graphic MANY years ago ...... you might have to download and make it larger to read, I copied this when the article was new Image Unavailable, Please Login
What an amazing video! I had no idea. It is sad to see these collections broken up. I got to see the Donington collection in 2017. So sad to see it broken up.
His "speech" before the auction was very disapointing. There was a " I dont give a rat's a$$" attitude and a body language far less nobble than his cars I was expecting a more mature few words from someone about to make 10 Million Euros selling his toys But thats just my opinnion
Obviously he had some connection to them or they wouldn't be his in the first place. In his driving video one could tell he was more concerned about something breaking than enjoying the ride. Then again he has Been There Done That . Let alone BTDT in full hard core racing conditions.
Jody Scheckter's Ferrari 312T4 - in which he scored all of the wins in his 1979 world championship season - has just gone for 6,800,000€ (US$7.4m / £5.9m) in the RM Sotheby's auction in Monaco. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I remember seeing the 6 wheeler in person at the Glenn and at Long Beach... they were funky looking cars.... usually in the top 10 but not that effective.
I'm honestly surprised it wasn't more. As far as pedigrees go for race cars, I'm not sure it gets better...The actual f1 world championship winning car that won Spa, Monaco and Monza and only ever driven by said World champion previously - and a Ferrari to boot. It's also actually usable as it doesn't need a full pit crew to start and run it unlike any of the few later cars that might have a similar pedigree.
