Ha! Yep, the tell-tale transverse stripe over the rear. Did Dodge and Triumph collaborate on that one? The cutie in the driver's seat apparently forgot step #3 of putting the top all the way down. Love the cowl 'fresh air vent' which could drive oak leaves into your ankles at 70 miles an hour. But it was fresh. Yes, had a GTV. 74 model. Flew to Baton Rouge on a cheap flight to get it, no one knew where I went. Met this stoner with a pretty nice car, his reflexes a bit slow while driving and he hit a cat. Egad. I drove that car back to Tuscaloosa in the same evening, about 5 hours, most after midnight, burned my wrist on the header checking oil. Later tumped the un-secured battery sideways in the trunk. Oops. It took me years to work up to a Porsche. Stretched to a 914 but always felt like a second class citizen. It took me til I was a junior in college to get a 911; 'twas ratted out and bent like a cheap pry bar. But I drove the heck out of it and generally acted like I'd made it.
Thanks all. Off to Scottsdale to watch it roll across the block. Along with a few hundred other cars to keep me unfocused. RM did a nice thing by including it here... https://www.facebook.com/RMSothebys/posts/10154823650238815
Goopie: are you saying this outstanding E-type went for $137,500? I've owned several, including a national winner, so would be shocked at this price. Thanks. Frank
Thanks, Ken. That figure is so low. The restoration alone must have cost multiples of that. I'd like to get back into E-types (a series I coupe), but have been priced out. Sold my 99.8 point car for $27,000 in 1999. Current owner wants $165,000. Wonder if this OTS pricing indicates any kind of 'market correction'!
Even with some of the mods and non correct restoration, this was still a great buy. When you consider that resto-mod camaros bring this kind of money, someday we will look back at this as a bargain.
Frank, sold my 67 OTS (99.2,3rd place National ranking) in 1979 for $15K. A lot of money then. Helped pay for a house on the beach. Carmen red/black. Gorgeous car. Passed on a '66 275 GTB for $6,800 in 1970. Bought the E-Type instead for $3,500. Only making $7,200 per year back then. The Ferrari was way too expensive. Sigh.
Goopie -- $15K was a ton of money back then for those cars. I paid $17K in January 1985 for my E (Sherwood Green/Suede Green interior). And a similar story similar story. Left grad school making $18,000/year when a GTB/4 cost $6000. Sigh for sure.
Can you email/text me about the 328 GTS 1987 you owned and sold? Thanks Ethan [email protected] 540-229-1971
