It wasn’t a hoax, you tin-foil-hat-wearing conspiracy theorist. There were genuine date bugs littered throughout code all over the place. It was a relatively simple bug to iron out, but the sheer volume of them made for a substantial amount of work which vastly outweighed available programming resources. And then our stupid Federal government decided to introduce GST 6 months after that, which created a perfect storm of labour shortages in IT that year.
