A friend of mine wants to get a DB7 Aston Martin since they are now in the $50K range. Other than the name, what makes the Aston Martin better than the Jaguar Xk8? It appears that the two cars share many of the same parts and look very similiar. Is the engine and the suspension in the Aston different than the Jaguar? Why should someone pay more for an Aston Martin DB7 than a Jaguar XK8?

I think you are right on the money. The AM just has more Bling than the Shaguar. They are both based on the ancient Shaguar XJS platform so neither is really all that great. Now the DB9 is fantastic :) Vanquish isn't bad either. Then again an E Type is always great

If it's an early A-M with the six its one thing, but the later ones have v-12s which would differentiate it from the Jag. My guess is that the suspension tuning is different as well.

It's true both cars are built on the same platform and there are a lot of similarities. Wisely, A-M has moved away from the Jaguar platform with the DB9.

Wasn't there a punk song with the line........."sex on wheels".........it describes the AM perfectly !! The little visual subleties of the AM just make it an even nicer car to stare at.....and as a bonus many of them have tricked out interiors whereas Jags are plain by comparison.

i have heard some not so great things about am reliability..but then again Jags are exactly toyotas either...the am db7 is a cheap way to get into the british, gentlemens sports car cheaply....no will not get ferrari,or lambo or even porsche like hard core performance, but its a different type of car...half sports car, half rolls royce....

Yea but they are the cr@p 6 cylinder ones. Personally, if I want a 90s AM, I would wait for a 12.

oh so a 1997 one for example
I would still take one for the looks even though the engine isn't that great

I've sat in various versions of both cars and prefer the Jag interior to AM's. While I agree the Jag interior is more understated, it has a much more coherent overall design; everything matches because nearly all of it is bespoke. By contrast, AM sourced a lot of their parts from multiple lower line pre-existing cars and it shows when you look at the details (eg Miata door handles on the early cars).

The biggest problem I have with the Jag is that it only comes with an automatic gearbox. However, that is nothing a capable fabricator cannot take care of ;).

Wow gauge and button design is ugly (The AM). And fit looks like a British car all right. :)

Sad, as I really loved the look of the later 90s DBs.

I would say with the AM you would be more incognito. everyone knows a jag when they see one.

I agree. Outside of LA, most people wouldn't know an AM if it ran them over.
