I've searched the archives and there is a lot of talk about where to find it, but the size varies from 5/16" (=7.93mm), to 8mm, to 7mm.

I did check the sources I found in the threads and no one had 8mm textile covered hose. Lots of 7mm sources (VW).

So, can someone tell me if it's 7mm or 8mm.

NOTE: I checked with my dial calipers on the existing hose around the carbs and it's closer to 8mm than 7mm. Of course, that's the end that was pushed over the barbed fittings so you'd expect after 7-years it would have expanded some.

this metric hose is ID 7,5mm and 5,5mm. The latter for the smaller line from the carbs back to the right hand fuel tank.
These are standardized diameters, say; if I request ' 8mm fuel hose' I get 7,5mm ID hose. At least over here in Europe.

    Best Regards from Germany

I just did the fuel hoses from pump to all four carbs on my 75 GT4 and used a BMW factory hose that's 8mm ID and 13 mm OD. Fit perfectly, and worked with the stock clamps.

Is it really that big of a deal to use fabric covered hoses??? You can buy regular fuel hoses at pep-boys for 50 cents/foot...

    Why the concern?

Just trying to keep as much OEM on the car as I can.

Where did you get your BMW hose? From the dealer? I've looked on line and only found 7mm and 9mm. 8mm wasn't even listed on the few sites I found the hose.

I've bought the BMW hose at two BMW specialists here in Berkeley, and I'm sure the dealer must have it too. It has a smooth rubber outer surface, like American hose, and has BMW, PNs, and dates stamped on it, so it's clearly not for concours use. This stuff is in my experience excellent.

My experience with American hose is good, if it fits properly.

My experience with the fabric-exterior European hose it that it can start weeping right through within a very short time, like a year. This was true for me on Alfas, BMWs, and VWs. I took all that stuff off my GT4 except in vent/vapor locations. I don't trust it.

Well I found some 7mm fuel hose with a fabric covering but it has a smaller OD than what's on the car now. The fittings all measure 7mm. It fits fine but the hose clamps seem to be a little big (but they do clamp it down).

I know it was replaced at one time but it looks like they used 5/16" which is 7.9mm and not 7mm hose. 1/4" is way too small.

A friend told me he used 5/16" hose and the fittings all leaked after a time b/c the ID is just too big.

I wanted to update this a little in case others are looking for fuel hose.

When I was intalling the new hose, it is a lot smaller than the 5/16" hose that is on there. I took my dial calipers to it and the hose ID is ~6.5mm. The fittings on the car are clearly 7mm however. 5/16" hose is 7.9mm. Now I'm not sure why you'd replace your hose with 5/16 b/c honestly it's way to big. Sure, you can clamp the hell out of it to hold it down, but I have to ask why? 7mm hose can be found at the Merc dealer or VW dealer for realatively cheap. It's just rubber fuel hose with no covering but they do have it.

http://www.bap-geon.com also has it and if there is a store near you it is the fabric covered hose. I asked about a larger size, but the parts guy said that metric hose comes in odd sizes;....ie, 3mm, 5mm, 7mm, 9mm, 11mm, 12mm (being the exception). I wanted the fabric cover b/c it looks OEM (except for the "Made in Germany" printed on it!) and I think it looks better than the plain rubber hose.

I'm going to send a message to the Onwers site and see if Malcom or Jeff can tell me what the OEM sizes of the hose are and what the clamps look like. The clamps are all of .31L on the site. 17-are required. The clamps on my car are "Gemie" style clamps and can be found here
    http://www.wurthusa.com/project/en/leftnavi/catalog/product.php?path=07.0179.jpg

I believe my hoses were replaced with US style hose. I found the shop that did it before I bought the car and it was done in 1997. They are cracked on the ends so it's definitly time to do them. I'm also going to do the filter (which is 6.3L at the owners site) and filler neck since I'm right there in the middle of it all.

If I hear back from Ferrari UK I'll post what they tell me here.

Just so happens I am also going through my fuel system.
After a fruitless rearch for braided hose (you all know what a stickler I am for originality and no modifications) I called Reoriginals who advertised 7mm Cavis wrapped hose at $11 per meter. The Re-Originals guy on the phone said it was backordered and recommended PEPBOYS.
Well, I ended up calling a VW Buggy shop who had the 7mm fuel feed and smaller 3mm return line in unmarked fabric covering in stock for $1.39/foot.

    Russ,

Bap Geon sells a lot of import stuff for VW's. Mine was $2.21/ft

What is the ID/OD of the hose you got?

It's exactly that BAP/GEON VW stuff I've seen begin leaking, right through the material, within an alarmingly short period. Both on my old VW and my Alfas. Normal air-cooled VW fuel line is I think too small for a 308.

I'll measure when I get home, but the interior diameter was about the same as the 5/16, but the rubber a bit thinner; The guy that sold it to me said it was an original german hose; I'll measure specifically tonight. There were no markings on the hose.

Well when Russ tells me what his is and the diameters I may buy what he's gotten instead.
I found the BAP/Geon site off a VW board. The guys on those boards use it and seem to have no problems with it. Was it only on the ends at the hose clamps, or was it all over the hose?

Measuring with a ruler, the hoses look to be:
7 mm ID; 12 mm OD
5 mm ID 9.5 mm OD

Well mine is too small. Is hose a nominal diameter like piping? I thought not. This stuff I got goes on VERY tight, almost impossible to get it to go one. I know it's supposed to be snug, but this is rediculous.

More searching has pointed toward Continental brand which is supposed to be 7mm x 2.5mm for the braided cover, and 7mm x 3mm for the non covered stuff.

The more I look online, the more I think BAP/Geon sold me 1/4" fuel hose and told me it was 7mm.

$22 down the drain. Lesson learned.
