I own a 1979 308 GTS. While I enjoy the Carbs, I love this car mainly for its looks. Just brainstorming & I know this is crazy, but if I took out out the Ferrari engine & wanted to put a different engine like a Jaguar automatic transmission in it....is this possible? If not, how about a manual transmission volkswagon engine instead. My dream is to sell the Ferrari engine, put in a great gas mileage engine instead. Have a beautifull Ferrari that gets 45 miles to the gallon. Is this possible? How much would you estimate I would get for the Ferrari engine? It has 57,000 miles on it right now. I appreciate any thoughts, advice concerning this. Happy Holidays!

Please, do not create such an abomination. If you must, go buy a Fiero conversion, it will be cheaper..and give you the same thrill, without the destruction of a Ferrari in the process. ;)

Okay...rant off, let's think about this a bit. What would it cost to convert? Let's say you can possibly do this for $10k (this may be low). Then, say you can get (maybe) $5k for your engine/transaxle. So you are out $5k...you have now devalued your car by half...so instead of it possibly being worth $30k (I have no idea what model 308 you have), your car is now worth $15k as a "frankenferrari". Less the $5k in converting, so you've just "lost" $20k. But you are saving $300 a year in gas; so in 67 years you will be "ahead" on this conversion! Convinced yet? ;)

Now my numbers are just picked out of the air, but I think you get my drift...

    Regards,
    Dave

    I think you're crazy!

You could probably get some $5,000 (or a little more) for your engine and transmission. For that price, you could probably get a Japanese four cylinder engine and automatic transmission transplanted. You'd also have to get someone to figure out stuff like the gearchange, throttle, axle shafts, but it would be entirely do-able. But, like I said, crazy. :)

This is Highly offensive, please sell your Ferrari to someone who will care for it & buy a Fiero kit car & do whatever you want with it

So you want to make a nice poser mobile, an automatic with a boring engine, its easy break out the sawzall and torches and start welding up some bracketts.

Sadly as more 308s get thrashed and sold cheap to owners that can't afford to maintain a Ferrari engine abortions like this will be happening, 308s with american V8s or other engines so they can be run cheap and people thinking they can get more performance also.

I believe the wheel base is different, and knowing Ferrari, nothing is "easy" ;)

Why don't you cut this guy some slack? Ok, so we wouldn't do it........... to each his own............. It is his mistake to make (which btw he hasn't yet). He's just asking for info. It's worthy of discussion. Especially as the cars get older and people don't have the funds to do a Ferrari engine rebuild. How many people do you think would actually go to all this trouble? 10? Not much to worry about if it makes an owner happy.

I cannot believe I am telling you this, but, I came across a Mondial some time back with an Audi engine and transmission. If a manual will go in then an auto will surely go in. I guess an auto would be somwhat easier as you don't have to mess too much with setting up gear selectors.

Based on his other posts, I think he's serious. I was serious too with the Mera comment -- it's a factory-built Pontiac with Ferrari looks and meets the bill for what he's asking.

If you're going to do this with a 308....

Well, you're going to need either a front wheel drive unit, or something from a mid-engined car. Maybe the Toyora MR2 unit would work, and if it was a turbo it would have some power. You'd really have to watch the track on the car to make sure the front and rear were similar. You'd also have an issue with the wheel patterns not matching unless you added spacers and such.

Going with an auto would simplify the linkage, and using an I4 would eliminate most of the clearance problems. Other possibilities might be the Alfa 164 unit, Fiero engine, or maybe a Northstar V8 with auto.

The tube frame actually makes for a pretty easy conversion, any good hotrod shop should be able to create motor mounts and such. You'll probably need custom inner liners on your wheel wells, and the exhaust is going to be fun for sure. As long as the motor is similarly sized, the existing cooling setup should work OK.

A Northstar V8 might make for a good conversion, actually. They make (I think) in the 300 HP range, and will run without coolant in an emergency!

In thinking about it, if this was done right it actually would have minimal impact on the car structure. If you picked the right units and had custom halfshafts built, you could even use the original Ferrari suspension in the back.

For all you traditionalist morons who have added nothing but wisecracks to my post. Go F*** yourselves. I like the Ferrari 308 body. Not a Fiero conversion or other kit car. The beauty of a Ferrari 308 is it's style & body. I could care less about the Ferrari 308 engine. If your view is different, then so be it, but I don't appreciate the 13 year old riffs. This is my car & I'm going to do exactly what I bloody wish to. Do what you want with your cars, but this is MINE. For those who have offered serious advice, I appreciate it.

Uh, not morons but yes, many traditionalists. You should see the firestorm when I asked about a trailer hitch!

Just grant that there are many out there who will have a negative opinion of this change, and let them be.

Look at it from our perspective -- we don't know you, there's no info in your profile, and your first question here could be considered a joke. I don't think you're a troll, but it could come off that way.

So, please fill out your profile, and then tell us here in this thread about your fabrication skills, budget, etc. That will help all of us in planning this thing.

The F1 tranny of the new cars is a hydralically operated standard.

It's easier for me to carry the gf and when I pushed the clutch in say "give me second gear", or whatever.....works pretty good and now that she has driven more miles with me I hardly have to specify the gear!!!!!!

I hardly ever have to put down my drink or cigar!!!!!

I would think an auto transmission from a Honda or other lateral mounted engine FWD car would fit better on the 308.
