There was a movie made in Italy in 2003 starring Sergio Castellitto as Enzo Ferrari, and endorsed by Piero Ferrari. I just happened to stumble across it:

    Has anyone seen it?

And is it available in Region 1 NTSC for North America?

Sometimes I wish they had filmed the Enzo Ferrari story back in the 60s starring Adolfo Celi. Everyone seems to agree that his portrayal of "Manetta" in "Grand Prix" was Enzo in everything but name only.

As a reminder, here is Commendatore Manetta's quote to Pete Aron in "Grand Prix" when the latter comes looking for a job:

"What means far more to me than anything else is: our good name! Our reputation represents desire for perfection of the highest quality. I gamble that reputation gladly, because I have *absolute* faith in every car that leaves this factory. But I will not risk it on a driver in whom I cannot have an equal faith. There are fewer than thirty men in the world qualified to drive Formula One; a mere half-dozen, perhaps, to win. At this moment, I am inclined to think you are not one of them."

Sounds like something Enzo would have said in a similar situation, don't you think?

Yes ... I purchased the DVD from Buy.com recently. I didn't know it existed ... and discoverd it while shopping for other movies. Good, well-done movie ... certainly NOT always flatering to Enzo. Seems like it probably did a well balanced job of reviewing his life.
At times the movie is a little over-dramatized .. but what the heck ... it is art! Also, at times it was a little hard to follow ... but it finally wrapped everything up at the end. Beautifully done in many ways ... very creatively filmed. It also allows the viewer to make some of their own conclusions. Definitely something for any Ferraristas collection.

As John said, we watched it over the weekend and can highly recommend it. There are so many things that stand out. The color of Laura's dress when they first met - the red of Ferrari and the purple of the first Ferrari - the 125. The drawing in the box of the 125 is the same drawing that's on a silk Ferrari scarf that John just got me. The scene in the collenade in Modena is where we had lunch with Gary last April; the scene where he finds the reporter is where we had ice cream after walking around the old town area. In his journal the day Dino passed away, he wrote "Dino is dead", "the race is lost". Although they left part off in the movie. The person who did the casting did an exceptional job in taking a very young boy into an old man. The photography was exceptional and the intro and music was fantastic. I found myself at times a bit teary-eyed while glued to my chair! I know we will watch it again and again and each time find a little something we missed the time before. The man is absolutely incredible.

It's in English. No dubbing or subtitles.
The cars shown are spectacular, though the emphasis is on the people and not so much on the cars or racing.

    Matt,

Saw it this weekend and like the others I recommend it. It was more about the life of a successful yet troubled person than it was about the cars. I thought parts we very unflattering and was surprised to see at the end that it was endorsed by Piero as well as Ferrari Spa. Even if it werent about Ferrari it would still be a good movie.

BTW did you ever find out any info on the paint shop where I had my car done. Is your Dad's car getting painted?

Hi Dan. I gave him the name and number of the shop, but he hasn't gone to see them. I think he's waiting for winter. Either that, or he's afraid to ask for a quote! ;)

I recently read My Terrible Joys, Enzo's autobiography, and his own self-portrait was fairly unflattering (and over-dramatic). I think that the obstinate personality necessary to form a legend like Ferrari doesn't make for a nice guy.

Thank you very much for all the responses!

Just for fun, check out the date that I first created this thread...
