My dad is considering buying the aston martin db9 coupe, but i am trying to tell him to get the car and trade in the benz s55 because we still owe $45,000 and the car is only worth $50,000. So there is barely any equity left for the car, but the aston dealer would pay it off. But he thinks the aston would lose value very quickly but he is getting a MSO '06 with $10,000 off the invioce. and it is fully loaded. Does anybody own a aston db9 and how have you observed the situation of those cars selling off ebay for $140,000 even though they have a msrp of 180,000 and they are no more than 2 years old. Any opinions? But keep in mind, if we get the aston then we cant get the 599 gtb fiorano. but the aston is a much better looking and more practical car then the 599. Me and my dad drove it a week ago and we love the exhaust and the looks we got from the gas station poeple while filling it up! I have some pics. Please give some advice because this is a make or break situation and I want it to make.
    Thanks a-lot,
    Vic

In answer to your question, yes they will drop in value initially rather quickly like any other non 430 luxury car. You can already pick up low mile 05's for 120's so if you want the car that might be the way to go. The volante looks to be holding a bit better but will still continue to drop. No way around it if you want the latest and greatest unless you are one of the chosen ones on the Ferrari list.

If you can get a 599...then order it drive it for the weekend then sell it for $140k over sticker and buy the Aston for cash. My friend has a Aston Martin 2001 DB7 convertible that he cant give away for $70k with only 9k miles. So like any english they depreciated like a falling rock.

Aside from the depreciation, and yes, you should be able to find a decent pre-owned DB9 at a reasonable price, the DB9 is a great driving car. It is the only car that I have driven that has seriously made me consider trading in my 360, except I love my 360 too much to part ways.

My dad is used to british cars being worth no more than a bag of beans after 1 year. but he does not want it to be the next db7. he loves the car and so so I but he cant buy used because he likes a long warrenty. and if he were to buy it for 155,000 the car would be worth 150,000 in 1.5 years because it will be 10,000 off invioce. So i dont say its a "deal" but it is a money saver in a way.
    Thanks,
    Vic

The Aston is going to drop in value like any other Aston....fast.

If you are buying it for 10k below invoice, that does not mean it will depreciate less....the more they are discounting new ones, the more the used ones will fall in value.

To be perfectly honest, your Dad needs to buy a used car and save 40k in depreciation, if he is THAT worried about being covered under warranty....well.....don't EVER buy a Ferrari.

btw....the DB9 is an absolutely amazing car. Fun to drive, amazing exhaust tone, gorgeous interior. A car is NOT an investment.....buy the car to enjoy it.

the AMV8 was the prototype name of the v8 vantage. My dad likes that car but it has a stick and there is no way for aston to do an auto. But It looks so wide! And I like it! Hey, if astons depreciate so much by the time I would be sixteen I could get a v8 vantage for like 45,000! LOL.

I just found out my dad had an aston db7 a longg time ago and he liked it but the car lost to much money. If he were to get an aston db9 used he could get a extened warranty. And your right to, you cant have fun while investing, and A car like an aston is fun!

Sounds like these are your options:

    1) New DB9. Yes, you may get it for 10k off, but its still going to drop like a rock. Great car, but get it if your interested in the car, not re-sale value.

    2) Used DB9. Depreciation has already set in somewhat. It will still go down, but the hit wont be as rough. And you will still have roughly the same car.

    3) V8 Vantage. Less room, cheaper, will still take a hit. Great exhaust note, not quite as fast.

    4) Aston Martin DBS. http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0606_james_bond_aston_martin_dbs/

The one from the new Bond movie. Same situation with depreciation, but man, your getting an awesome car. Got to wait for it though.

    5) Ferrari 599. Amazing Car. Engine based off the Enzo powerplant. Lightning quick shifts, amazing reviews from every magazine, will appreciate in value if you get one early. Gotta wait for it though. Doubt you'll regret it.

that glorious exhaust note at start-up is worth the price of admission alone = ) I don't think I've heard anything quite like it before.

the DB9 uses a manumatic transmission, from what I understand? This should arguably be much cheaper and hassle-free to maintain than any of the magneto marelli F1 type transmissions in the Ferraris, I imagine.

Honestly, just because the warranty expired is not a good enough reason to sell the car...he's going to lose more in depreciation by buying a new car than he will fixing the S55.

In Europe they are now offering a "sport pack" with a manual transmission and beefier suspension for the DB9. Thats gotta be great. Not sure if it will be offered here in the states yet.

I know that guy in the picture. Brian Bucholtz. Sells alot of Astons.
The DB9 is sleek, beautiful, sounds AMAZING and it is very well made but its no 599! Hold out for the 599, there arnt too many things that will be faster and cooler than that besides rocketship. A modern Daytona.

Get a used DB9 and ask about getting an extended warrenty. I know AM offeres extended warrenties, as I enquired about them before.

My dad just had to replace the air-matic pump and it costed him $2,000! Its a great car but without the warranty my dad would go broke! The salesman is finding us a used 06 DB9 with barely any miles, so it may work out and I hope it does.
    thanks,
    Vic
