I was surprised nothing turned up when I searched for this. I got a nail in my tire and the tire will be patched. Are there any tire experts that could offer advice as to the safety of the tire at high speeds (150mpg)? The tire was not punctured on the sidewall, it's in the middle of the tread and the tires are in good condition otherwise.

A patch does impact the Speed Rating....I'll let experts chime in 'how much".....

Ok for street speeds but I'd never take one to Track Day, that's my personal boundary, on the subject....

Don't chance it. Risking it at 150MPH for $200-300... are you crazy?

I have taken my 997TT to 180 mph 4 consecutive times in one day (Texas Mile) with a plugged front tire (no time to buy a new one) .....Crazy? yes, but the tire was fine.

You should probably check with the tire manufacturer. Last time this happened to me (Bridgestones on a Porsche I think) it said that the speed rating was maintained if the tire was "properly repaired". I believe this means a patch not a plug.

Then again you are going to find a bunch of people will say change it anyway "to be on the safe side". Of course this means changing both tires (can't change just one, right?) at a cost of $600-$800. For one nail.

That is my understanding (the tyre has to be dismounted) too.

All I can say is you are extremely lucky to be able to get tyres so cheaply :( - In Oz you would be lucky to get one tyre for that!

A patched tire is perfectly safe....at 45 mph.

I wouldn't dare take it up to 150. Your odds of survival in a road car after a failure at that speed? Slim. Just slim.

i would trust a patched tire myself (truly patched NOT PLUGGED) depending where it was patched. if it was across the pavement surface then the centrifugal force would keep the patch in place at high speeds and no worries (IMO)

closer to the sidewall and I retract the above statement.

then i would still trust it to highway speeds but not above 100mph in a straight line or 65 on turns. and in no way a road course at all.

So, if you're willing to risk your life for a few hundred bucks, go for it. That appears to be the general opinion? How about the other guy he takes out when the tire goes flat at 150mph, does he get a choice?

Change the friggin tires. Save 'em, put 'em back on when you're not on the track and use 'em up. Or if the speed your suggesting is on the highway, well, you're on your own. :D

Not sure about Ferrari dealers, but from experience I know an authorized Porsche dealer will not patch or plug a tire. Granted there are liabilty and new tire sale considerations, but at the end of the day, why screw around with your six figure car over the price of a new tire. I have never gone with a plug or a patch on any hi performance car (32 i think) over the years.

    Exactly.

If you're planning on 150 mph, presumably that's track use. Not worth risking your life, IMHO.

I'm sure it's fine for street use, but given the structural engineering of modern tires and the performance envelope (acceleration, braking, cornering) of a modern Ferrari I wouldn't trust a bit of glue and rubber from the tire shop.

The tire guys have always told me that once it's been plugged or patched, you shouldn't exceed 90mph. Every time I pick up a nail I take it to Discount Tires and they always patch and plug it, but they still say don't go over 90mph.

I have done at least 130mph with a patched & plugged tire but I know I shouldn't have.

I came out from a coffee place to find a flat after 180+ HS runs one day and had nightmares about "What could have been" for 5 years.

    Change the tire! :)

How do they patch and plug it? put the patch over the plug?

You'd probably never have a problem with it but, why be a cheap Ferrari fook if it could mean your life in that split instant?

Honestly I'm not sure how they do it. I'm guessing they cut the plug flush with the inside of the tire and then patch over it.

    From personal experience..

At the beginning of a rally from Philly to Miami my friend got a puncture in his 997 that was making a hissing noise when outside of the car while parked. We used fix a flat and he made it to Miami and back with plenty of HS runs. Therefore, if fix a flat works that well I would assume a tire patch would do wonders!

If it were me, I would get it patched asap to avoid any "shat, I should have done that.." if anything did happen to occur during the HS runs

Tires are not something I would like to mess with on HS or even freeway miles. They are cheap insurance. They are the cost of living and can easily be, if cheaped out, the cost to die.

Why in the world would one want to play near others, or just by yourself with questionable tires.

we've all done it, but we all know the answer too......change them.

Why take a chance on the only contact with the road?

Go cheap on filters or fluids? Sure, who cares.

    On tires - no way!

    Replace the tire.

You'd be better advised to take your tire savings, buy a gun and play Russian Roulette. Alone. At least you won't be risking anyone else's life (and a fine car).
