This is curious!? ...a large example, but some other in-home use examples can be found online ....this one at York Cathedral, real grass, grown on a layer of recycled textile, without use of any soil(s)!

...would I want for myself? no, but I could see used as a lawn extending into an (covered) outdoor room type of space?

I've seen those, they roll the entire field away, or cover it for other events ....what is under the turf? soil, or something else?

FWIW, artificial turf is banned in soccer. Back in '94 during the World Cup they laid sod in a couple of indoor stadiums (JFK? Chicago?) and obviously humidity went thru the roof! (Or it would have if there wasn't a roof in place - Just got stuck inside!)

As for the cathedral, it may get some light, but I can't see it lasting for long......

    Cheers,
    Ian

there's I think enough light in there (the pic shown is natural light), but the moisture sure would be an issue, you'd have to keep that turf well watered - something most people fail to do with new sod, and why it dies typically

practical? ...not in the slightest! :D

University of Phoenix Stadium is the one that has the rolling field that goes outside to catch some rays. IIRC, there is soil and the entire platform is probably 3 feet tall so a good amount of soil can be placed there (not all of it as they have hundreds of electric motors in it to move it).

You'd have to install a bunch of grow lights to keep it growing. When the cops investigated your high energy bills you'd say, sir, it's ok I'm only growing some grass.

This is absolutely correct. However, LEDs are looking very promising in simulating sunlight. I can envision a hybrid mesh/blanket with integrated leds that will be able to grow turf at some point in the future.

The original Astrodome, under the glass roof was intended to allow sun in to let the grass grow naturally.

The result was that the grass quickly burned, and Astroturf was invented!

I use to do the same with ants! :D ...there was a full documentary on the indoor arena with real grass grown, it's a huge technical and labor intensive effort to be sure!
