ok, anybody care to enlighten me how to delete these files? i went all the way to super basic safe mode, and i cannot access, rename, delete or modify the file.

i dont have anything to hide, but i am learning more and more about Windows based operating systems, and i want to control these files, as opposed to the files having control.

i only have one file, but i understand its in 2 other places besides "cookies" ?

    any help would be great.

OS is XP64, and i have a XP32 machine that is old as dirt.

    thank you.

I think CCleaner will remove that file.

IIRC, reboot will be needed because Windows will not allow that file to be deleted while it is running in any mode.

I think it nukes your saved passwords, too.

    Use Firefox.

CCleaner is pretty conservative in registry cleanup ... this is good but somewhat pointless. WinASO is the nicest I've used, thorough but not invasive.

Log on as another admin and delete the other account's index file. But first, make sure you're not using account switching and that it's logged out instead.

This one gets good reviews and has that all-important ability to backup the registry:

old, low tech approach might be to boot up off of a cd/diskette/etc, in some sort of dos mode, etc. and go into the subdirectory itself and delete the file.

old, but often still does the trick.

May not work so well if your C:\ drive is NTFS, vs. FAT32

found this online, these are the locations of index.dat, its redundant copies of the same info as far as i can tell. somebody went through alot of trouble to be able to see everything you do online.

    quote:
Index.dat files keep a record of every website you have ever visited and the one in the Content.ie5 folder just keeps growing and growing. It's OK to delete the Index.dat files as windows will created new empty files after rebooting.

Open Notepad and type the following:

    Del "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\UserData\index.dat"

    Del "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Cookies\index.dat"

    Del "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat"

    Del "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\UserData\index.dat"

    Del "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Cookies\index.dat"

    Del "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat"

    Del "C:\Documents and Settings\Local Service\Cookies\index.dat"

You can download this file by clicking HERE. Unzip it, right click the file and choose Edit from the menu to edit the file.

In this example, the username is Administrator. Replace Administrator with your username. You will need to add any additional users to the script.
Do not confuse All Users, Default User, LocalService or NetworkService as being users.

In notepad Save the file with the file name "IndexDat.cmd" (with the quotes). Your file should now be named IndexDat.cmd. It should not be named IndexDat.cmd.txt.

Copy the IndexDat.cmd file to the following folder:

    C:\Winnt\System32\GroupPolicy\Machine\Scripts\Shutdown

    or

    C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy\Machine\Scripts\Shutdown

depending on where you operating system resides.

So IndexDat.cmd should now be in the Shutdown folder.

Now go to Start & Run and type in gpedit.msc and click OK. Open up Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Scripts (Startup/Shutdown) and double click Shutdown. Click the Add button and browse to the IndexDat.cmd file in the Shutdown folder. Highlight the file, click Open and OK twice. Every time you shut your computer down, it will wipe out the index.dat files.

    quote

i saved this as a text file, and need to find it again to give credit to the owner.

edit : her eis the link to the page with this info : http://www.compu-docs.com/indexdat.htm

seems these are the only files that need to be deleted? as opposed to the others on the list?

    \Cookies, \History and \TIF.

    http://download.cnet.com/Index-dat-Analyzer/3000-2144_4-10564321.html

anybody have any experience with this?

i read a few forums that did not have good things to say about CCleaner , but i am still learning and i was a bit lost as to what the heck the issues actually were.

nevermind, i read all the fine print, and this dat-analyzer does not delete the files.
