I can't quite understand why people put the "In Loving Memory" decal on their cars. This trend only started a few years ago. Anyone know where this started from and the inspiration behind it? Personally I find it tacky, but to each their own.

This has been around since I was in high school. I don't find it tacky at all.

If it provides comfort to the loved ones of the deceased, what's tacky about it?

Dedicating an object that will go down in value and eventually cease to exist just doesn't click for me. I'm definately not trying to offend anyone, but wouldn't you rather have it on the dash, or on the glovebox? Where you can see it and appreciate it?

BTW I find all decals tacky. They distract your eye from the lines of the automobile and turn it into a rolling billboard.

I don't think anybody looks at a minivan and goes "OMG, look at the lines"... lol.

The minivan is an example lol, I've seen them on all sorts of cars from Camaro's, Mustangs, to 350z, is350, 325i's

I had an artist hand paint various Grateful Dead symbols on 3 of my cars. It has personal meaning for me, (I probably would not be alive it it were not for the group and my fellow deadheads) so I have no problem with anyone putting anything on something they own as long as it means something to them.

I know what you're saying overall, but what I highlighted above I'm not following?

A friend of mine put a RIP sticker on his truck after a friend of ours died, it was his best friend his entire life. He also tattoo'd something similar as well. It was part his grieving process.

It is what it is. I personally don't like putting stickers on cars either, even on the window. Although I have no problem with alumni stickers, which ive been contemplating for the past year.

I think if they had 6 or 7 RIP stickers with names and stories it would be a little tacky, but one or maybe two dedicated to a particular friend or family member doesn't bother me.

    Being memorialized on a minivan...tacky.

A t-shirt however, is very tasteful. The misspelling of the name is just an added touch of cuteness.

    You know what's worse?

Where they have the entire family on the back of the car, with the names underneath. Seriously, that's asking for trouble.

    Only picture I could find:

They're just asking for trouble, too. I know some cops and they've told me some of the weird **** that can get you pulled over. Of course political stickers, but also a dirty car and windows down in the summer. They'll never say that's why you got pulled over, of course. (Dirty car/no air conditioner: if you'll let these things slide, what else will you let slide? Insurance? License? Warrants?)

I have a plumber friend who added a few hundred bucks to a bid because of the homeowner's political bumper stickers and yard signs...don't let 'em see your Ferraris!

Must not be as much gang violence in Canada. Around here every thug in a clapped out Caprice has one to "honor his hommies who fell".

It's not quite as big as it use to be but I still see it time to time.

    "Lopez", "Gonzalez"

A crazy *white* guy I knew in high school thought it was so tacky and ridiculous he put his last name in Ol' E on the back of his Honda Civic....."Jenkins". lmao

The first time I remember seeing this was when Dale Earnhardt was killed, and you would see number 3's with wings and his birth and death dates on every Chevy pickup in my area.

I find all of these to be incredibly tacky. Perhaps for some people it is a method of grieving the loss of someone close "taken too soon". Everyone deals with that difficult part of life differently, but isn't for me. If my brother or my daughter were killed, I am pretty sure I wouldn't be getting a die cut for my back window.

As for the cartoon members of the family, they are interesting but not for me either). I always wonder what the motivations are for those stickers. Maybe the dad wants it to say "the woman driver of this minivan is married with a bunch of kids, look elsewhere". Maybe the wife is secretly saying "I am stuck in this ****ing miserable minivan but at least I have a husband and see my kids everyday". Maybe they have a blended family and this is some attempt to say all the kids and stepkids are part of the family.

Indian people put their kids' names on the back windows of their car.

I see it a lot in India... I saw it today on both a Camry and a Sienna; coincidentally both driven by my people.

    :p

Here it's cursive script or old English. Here and in WA state [oddly] the Mexican state ones were popular. I joked with my Hispanic friends that I have always wanted a big ONTARIO banner for my car window like the MICHOACAN or OAXACA stickers.

These are quite popular at the beach towns and often have the names below each pair. I hate them almost as much as the stupid stick figure families complete with dog.
