Thought you all should be aware of a website that a co-worker sent to me yesterday that was pretty disturbing. Try it on yourself. They even provide a mapquest to your exact address.

    www.zabasearch.com

Don't waste your time e-mailing them to remove you. I e-mailed them asking them to remove me from their database and this is their red-tape riddled reply.:

    From: [email protected]
    Subject: Your ZabaSearch.com Inquiry

We received your request. The following is the fastest way to create,
edit or block your records from appearing in ZabaSearch. ZabaTools
allow you to take control of the information available about you or to
manage how you allow others to communicate with you. You can create,
edit, block your record or add a ZabaLink all for free.

Why create a record? If you don't exist in ZabaSearch and would like
    to be included.

Why edit a record? If you are in ZabaSearch, but would like to update
your information. Or, add your e-mail address or your web site URL to
    your record.

Why block a record ?** If you want to block your address and/or
    telephone number.

Add a free ZabaLink! Instead of blocking a record, consider replacing
your address and/or telephone number with a ZabaLink*.

**If someone finds and clicks your ZabaLink (placed where your address
or telephone number was), they will come to an e-mail form that will
allow them to send a message to you without knowing your e-mail address,
where you are, or if you ever even received the message. You can
respond, ignore, or send back a non-delivery notice. ZabaLinks empower you
to control how people can communicate with you on the Internet. You
can be found, only if you want to be, on a person by person basis. And,
    ZabaLinks are free!

In order to create, edit, or block your record and/or to add a
ZabaLink, all for free, you must make that request in writing and mail it to:
ZabaTools, P.O. Box 45210 Omaha, NE 68145. Receiving requests by mail
allows us to verify and process your requests quickly. Records created,
edited and ZabaLinks added may take up to several weeks to appear in
ZabaSearch. Records requested to be blocked are typically processed the
next business day after receiving the request. You will be notified by
e-mail when you request enters our system and then once more when the
requested records have been adjusted. Please specify if you want to
create, edit, delete a record and/or add a free ZabaLink, e-mail address
or URL to your record. If you add a free ZabaLink, please include the
e-mail address where you would like messages blindly forwarded to from
    your ZabaLink.

In order to fill your request your letter must contain the following
information to insure we create, edit or delete the correct records.
After you confirm by e-mail that we processed your request, your letter
and the information you provided in it will be shredded. You will have
created a record for yourself just as you like it and will be eventually
given online tools to adjust your information as you like live in
    ZabaSearch 24/7.

    1. E-mail address
    2. Full name including middle initial
    3. Address of the record you wish to create, edit or delete
    4. Phone number you wish to have removed
    5. Year of birth.
    6. Specify if you are requesting to create, edit or delete a record or
if you want to add a ZabaLink
    or URL to your record.
    7. Sign and date your request

    Actually not that disturbing...

The information on this site is all public record - specifically based off of your past telephone public listings... AKA - if you were listed in your phone book when you lived at the address(es) - you will show up here...

If you ever had a phone number that was NL (non listed) you will not find yourself here for that specific number/address.

I noticed I had 5 of my past houses listed - all of which were in the phone book at one time or another... The last 3 houses - are not listed in this - due to the fact that I did not list my number.

What they do is keep a history of past phone listings - thus if you have moved - they still will have it.

The birth year information on this site - is bogus - mine was wrong on all but 1 of the listings... Which at one time the phone company or other public source probably collected this info.

Not really anything to worry about - unless you have a stocker that didn't know your address - but now does...

Being in the High tech industry - this does not scare me as much as how just 10 years ago (or maybe less) - we used SSN# for our primary means of identification - do you remember how many times and places asked for SSN# for identification - and who still has it...

Intellius.com is another one, but you have to pay. It doesn't go off of phone records for everything.

If you have an unlisted number, zabasearch will not find you, but intellius might.

Yup, you're ok if your phone number is unlisted. Otherwise someone can map a route right to your front door.

Interestingly, this does not have some individuals who can be found on people.yahoo.com...if you get multiple entries, simply cross reference with the wife's name. Voila!

Yes, but it's sitting there on your kitchen table and it heard your family wishing you happy birthday--that's how it knew. Then it just called up headquarters and updated your record for you.

I don't have a home phone, only a cell phone and I'm not listed in any books and my info is there except for my cell phone number. Who cares though, not me.
But it does make me wonder how they got the info since it's not from the phone book.

Sale of mailing lists by mail order companies, credit bureaus, real estate sale records, police records, etc.

Mostly it's from mail order companies and the companies that exist to serve their needs for good mailing lists.

The scary thing is, my old best friend is listed under my address on Zabasearch . My auto insurance agent also told me he was listed under my address in the DPS(Department of Public Safty) records. I received a couple of warrants for his arrest a couple af years ago and just put them back in the mailbox. He must have had a drivers license issued under my address. I wish I knew where he really lives...I haven't seen him in several years.

I'm not listed on Zabasearch, but I am on people.yahoo interestingly enough.

My home phone comes up as "Unavailable ID" whenever I call someone and Mapquest, etc can't find my house because the zip code I use is actually different from the city I live in. It's not impossible to track me down, but it would take more research than usual.

Yahoo has an option to remove your listing. If you aren't a member of yahoo and you are still listed, contact them and request that they remove it. Yahoo should do it.
I'm not listed on Yahoo's email list even though I created a listing two weeks ago. I don't understand it.

I didn't have to click on the link to see his address and his phone number. The only link that doesn't work for me is the Satelite images but, I can just use google maps for that.

I'm in there, but the information is not correct. One of the listings says I was born in 1946. Yeah right.

Erik, it says that because, with the software they're using, 1946 was the earliest year the program would allow them to select... :D

I have zero debt, so I'm not worried about collectors. However, what can a person do to get rid of as much of their info as they can, if not all of it. With the way identity theft is these days what can be done? Since you're in the biz, what do you recommend?

The only way is to become anonymous. That would mean pretty much totally disappearing off the radar. A lot of work. There's books and net stuff on it. Not really worth it if you don't have anything to hide.

No thats not what I mean.

What I'm talking about is getting rid of all the info people can get about your finances. Like I HATE when I have refinance in the past, and then all of a suddent I get bombarded with all these letters asking me to refinace. "No idiots, I just did". It really is a pain in the neck. I have been able to stop the solicitation calls, thank's to the new law, but what about the rest. The credit card offers I have gotten to slow down. I just don't like the idea of my personal info being out there for any jokers to get a hold of.

    One thing you can do:
Keep a mailbox and don't receive mail at home--just chuck all the junk that comes without even looking at it, because all the important stuff comes to the mailbox. Friends and family might send you cards though...you will just have to deal with that.

When you refi, rent a different mailbox at a different location, and use that address throughout the transaction. After it's done, cancel that mailbox. Now, if you get solicited at your existing mailbox, you will know who "leaked" your address. And you can always switch again.

    I don't do this...just a thought I had. YMMV.
