How difficult is it to import an exotic (Ferrari, Lambo...) from another province (Quebec, Ontario...) to BC (Vancouver)? Do I need to go through the same procedures as a US import (official dealership inspection), or is aircare enough (since it's already registered in Canada)? I see good deals sometimes, but they're usually in eastern Canada.
    Anyone know?
    Thanks!!!!

In addtion to the above, and assuming you buy the car and have a legal sales agreement (purchased, for example in Ontario), you'll need to obtain a temporary licence in Ontario to drive the car out of the province and to BC. Even if the car has a current Ontario licence and the seller lets you leave it on the car, its not legal for you to do so because your sales agreement is a legal document specifying you are the owner, not someone else. You get the temporary permit from the Ontario Motor Vehicle Board. You'll then need an insurance binder from ICBC to cover travel from point of purchase to your home for the number of days you specify you'll need to make the trip. If purchasing from back east, beware salt issues (needless to say) plus possible effects of mega potholes on the car's suspension.

or save yourself the money and most importantly TIME and ship it VIA rail, it'll cost you about $1000.

    Call J.Simon's or L.Hansen's Forwarding....I prefer Simon's....My Aston Martin shipment's don't show up in B.C with a RIPPED fender....

    Thanks guys!

I've done one of these before, but not for an exotic. Can any certified garage (like Canadian tire) do this, or does it have to be a Ferrari/Lambo dealership?

Does that include picking up the car from the seller and drop off at my door?

Also, what about taxes? Do I pay the tax from the province the vehicle was purchased in, and then claim a refund? I guess I'll have to pay BC tax (GST PST) before I can insure it here.

Again, thanks for all the help!!!!!

Shipping the car is best. Use hansen's searail or as James mentionned Simmons. You cant beat the price. Just like KDS and James, we've all shipped tonnes of stuff hi and low end and never an issue. It's insured too.

By the time you add gas, time hotels etc...

Not sure about Simon's but Hansen's will pick it up wherever, you do NOT pay ontario taxes as you are a out of province resident.

Not sure about dropping off at your door but, best to call and ask them at the very least get them to drop it off at the mechanic who's doing the safety/emission's test this way you can go straight to the ministry with your bill of sale and those thing's and have a b.c ownership within a couple hour's of it landing at your mechanic's.

Dont ship with a rail company thats crazy. They dont have proper insurance, it is NOT enclosed and they do not know what they are doing and WILL damage your car because of the loading systems.

To ship an exotic you need to use an insured tailgate lift enclosed transport company. They are out there. Do a search on here and I am sure you can find a reputable company that actually specializes in Exotics and has proper equipment, trained professional drivers and 'real' insurance. These things cost money which is why the rates are higher. Ask James to tell you the story about a certain very wealthy guy from Toronto who shipped his Lambo to Florida on a tilt and load recommended by a dealer and how much money that ended up costing him. No insurance and a total writeoff. This particular gentleman now only uses one company to handle anything he has and trust me, he has 'just a couple' nice cars. lol.

Good luck on the purchase. I am researching purchasing a nice Italian myself which is why I joined the board.

    Cheers.

I wouldn't feel too comfortable leaving an exotic car in the hands of a C.T. mechanic.

I know FMOV does NOT do MVI's, but Weissach does (inspection centre #S4458). "tjacoby" on this forum had, I believe, "Milo European Cars" (781 Kingsway, Vancouver, ins. #S2482) do his MVI for his 348 and I think he was pleased with their service.

rail companie's are insured I think and certinly enclosed, some shipping companie's use open-air transport truck's and that company you're talking about WOULD have been the king of exotic shipping in Ontario at the very least until that happened and now, NOTHING! dumb driver decided to take a customer's 6.0 for a drive and ended up upside down in a swamp!!! and probably the WORST customer with enough money to screw them until they were nothing....

Just do your research and I certainly don't recommend shipping by rail for exotic's, I would use T.F.X it'll run you about $2800 but it will get there in the condition it left, they're insured and bonded for $2,000,000.
In fact I have a 355 spider being picked up in Ohio on the 8th and a superleggera being picked up shortly.

However if you must, I would call J.Simon's and ask there insurance details.

If you're not one of those people afraid to put miles on their exotic, and if you can carve out some time, why not drive the car across the country. I've done it across Canada with an newly purchased exotic, as well as from Dallas Texas to Vancouver. Drives of a lifetime!

I own TFX and the price is about $1000 lower from Toronto to Vancouver. Price would be $1995.00CDN door to door.

The reason why that customer didnt take them for anything at all was because they have nothing to take. They are a tow truck company without proper insurance.

Saying that a tow truck company would have been the king of shipping exotics isnt quite accurate. Those guys dont even operate legally. Be careful who you do business with as far as shipping because anybody can hang out a website or a buy some piece of crap converted freight trailer and a 15 year old Peterbuilt. Our rigs are worth around $450,000.00CDN each and he would have to buy 21 if he wanted to be 'king' (we have 20). Then he would have to figure out alot of stuff that we have learned in 30 years. I have had 6 FXX's on one trailer before. Following it was another trailer with 3 Factory F1 cars from Ferrari. I doubt Sea Rail can say that.

If you want to know how to ship a Ferrari you should call Ferrari North America and ask them who they use. Or the Ferrari Club of America, etc. All roads lead back to one company that has been in business for 30 years and shipped nothing but exotics since 1988.

Anyways, I am here to do research on Ferraris not for business but just saw the thread and wanted to warn the members about some of the perils of shipping these cars that we all love and that take up so much time and income.

James, we have spoken on the phone a few times I hope you are well.

Does Jacqui (sp ?) still work for you ?

She is great.....moved a few cards thru your outfit in the past and always dealt with her. No BS.....ever. Unlike many other companies in your industry I should add.

I actually only use and recommend T.F.X and only recommended j.simon's as he asked about that method specifically I think.

Infact I have a car(355 spider) being picked up by you guy's on thursday in Ohio going to Kelowna and a superleggera being picked up in three week's for delivery to medicne Hat, Alberta of all places.

It's just some time's some client's are in a rush to get their new toy's and I have to explore other options.

Like right now the seller is desperate to get paid for the lambo so i'm looking into shipping it to Montana and then someone local pick it up and deliver to Montana, although I think i'm just going to advise waiting for you guy's to pick it up.

Question about your name though, do you have a ar-15? i'm actually in the process of studying for my restricted and un-restricted firearm's licence's!

I might have a few AR's...lol. They are a restricted rifle, fairly expensive and you cant use them very much but when you do they are a very nice piece and fun to play with. Kind of like a Ferrari actually.

We appreciate you recommending us and using us. Keep the business coming so we never have to get 'real jobs' and can continue doing what we love.

There's a ferrari California in classic ferrari red/tan combo somewhere in quebec,But I'm dreaming at the moment so dont pay addition to that, look's are starting to grow on me and aren't as common as dodge vipers :)

why who ever bought that could have just went to the weissach (vancouver,b.c) & bought the Bianco Monocerus (white) superleggera on the show floor then waiting & paying a whole lot just to ship it in and with the U.S Exchange rate....Might as well have anyway IMO.

strange they just didn't custom order them-self a LP560-4 since it's quicker too, guess they dont know?.
