Appologies if this has been asked before - I have a question which I need some advice before committing to importing a Ferrari 355 spider into the country (uk). The car is currently in Spain and the dealership company I am dealing with are asking me for a £1500 deposit to bring the car into the country (If I do not want the car then 500 quid they keep for travel expenses) My question is where is my garantee that I am not paying just any old person off the street this money then will hear nothing from them again? They said they will provide an invoice (but I can knock one of those up in 5 mins). The company does sound ok (saw advert originally in auto trader (website) and clicked to there dealer website. Any help would be greatly appreciated, here's hoping to be a future ferrari owner. One last thing is there a check list of questions i can ask the seller (if I am going to be buying from a photo). Sorry just thought of another question, what do I need to check (VAT/import duty?) has been payed before I agree to sale price?

Don't do it honestly, they did it with my car in Autotrader and the phone number was a spanish company trying to sell me my own car!!!!

And to add to insult the guy actually admitted it in the end, and asked me if I wanted to get invloved which I rightly said no and then forwarded to my mates at MI6.

Do you seriously think they need to advertise UK car located in Spain cars in the UK?

In the same week a dealer called me asking if I had my car still as he had paid 3k into an account exactly the same way and would be able to retrn it if it was not to his liking, I couldn't beleiev a dealer of all people falling for this crap.

Only way forward is for them to show you the car in person......globespan/easyjet flight for couple of hundred quid and at least you'll know if they bail it's saved you a fortune!!

I've never contacted that garage again but my guess is his car never turned up! and his cash was gone.

    Please please think about it!!!!

look at http://www.419eater.com/ and then search for car scams, it's all there in black and white!!

My apologies if the car is true but when it looks like **** and smells like ****, it's cos it's usually ****.

Thanks for the advise so far guys - and the question on why I have not looked in uk for one already imported is that I have been for the last year at least. I have set my heart on a black f355 spider and this was advertised in autotrader - the dealer is a uk dealer but the car is in Marbella at the moment. As I said the company does sound ok but just wanted other peoples advise/experience. I have see 2 in the uk and have not been impressed with the quality at all. I also just missed out on one that was sold from good old Verdi's (shame as that car was perfect) just not right time for me. Thanks again guys, I might have to get a flight out there as they have offered me to do that as an option as well. Does any one have any advice/experience of the import duty/tax that i need to make sure is covered in the price of the car?

i presume you mean this one:

    http://www.blueautos.co.uk/view_car.php?car_id=56&PHPSESSID=36251871c8e680144b0a49adefe9b147

    1) first thing i thought when i saw the add was this was a US spec car due to the side indicators on the front spoiler. Someone on this forum will know the answer to that but i cant see why a spanish spec car would look any different to mine (german) or UK.

2)Also isnt their number on the add a mobile?

    3) are other cars on the website also cheap?

i would also advise caution. Regarding tax, it would be possible for a car not to have has vat paid on it if it was registered in the name of a company i think. in which case you may have to pay it.

edited to add, just looked on Autotrader, nice colour combo, does look like a US car also a '97 would be on a P or R plate wouldn't it , not an S ?

I'd be going ot look at it if I were you or drop on ot the Spanish section here and ask a known member to at least check it really exists

there would be no vat to pay if the car was coming from the eu, as long as its over 6 months old and done more than 7000km

I work in Gibraltar and am in Marbella every weekend, if you give me details or PM I might be able to stop and have a look at it. As a general comment Ferrari down here seem to be quite expensive so I doubt the authenticity of the advert. I've always thought the cheapest place to buy a LHD car is in the UK!

I imported my 328 into France from Belgium, and it was first registered in Italy. As mentioned above, so long as the car is not currently registered in a country outside the EEC ( beware that Switzerland has many nice Ferraris available but is outside EEC) then the European taxes have already been paid, you simply have to get the UK documentation made out by showing all the existing Spanish documents. If you purchase a car currently registered in a country outside the EEC, even it it was at one time registered in an EEC country, you will have to pay UK taxes based on the current market value. I don't know about the authenticity of the particular car you are looking at, although looking at the photo I do agree that I am pretty sure that photo is taken in the USA, I would guess they don't own these cars but act as agents because many of the photos seem to have different backgrounds.
Good luck with your search !!

Gents, I've dealt with Blueauto's and they are 100% legit

I looked at their 430 F1 2 weeks ago in Doncaster. Both Ti and Sophie his wife are very nice, I wouldn't have a problem dealing with them

    Lovely massive big house too.

thanks for all the advise guys - this website is such a find (for me) with all the decent people with lots of experience thanks to everyone. One day I hope to be able to contribute and give some people advice back (when i have some to give that is). Marky1 - I may take you up on the offer and will pm you when I have details of the agent in Spain. Dictys - thanks for looking into co. details. Andy355 that is the car I was looking at purchasing (good research) never wanted to name any names at first but you guys are good. Thanks also to all those people who responded on import issues. Jonny5 - it is good to see you have some experience with the company - like i said before, I wasn't doubting them - just wanted to do some homework beforehand.

assuming the car is genuine, if its a US spec car you still have some more research to do. A) is it duty paid in eec, b) what is the difference between US spec and european spec (emissions, lights etc). And to be honest if it is US spec i would leave alone as its not THAT cheap - you will struggle to sell it again. Better off putting up a wanted ad on ferrari owners club (free)/ sunday times (70 quid) or similar. I bet there is a lhd drive car over here that fits your spec, someone might sell if they see a wanted ad. In my (limited) research it seems that lhd drive cars are cheaper here than in europe. When selling mine i could have got a better price in germany. And lastly, if your budget is stretched so you cant afford to pay another 5k for a car then dont by a ferrari as sooner or later you will probably get stung for that much in repairs anyhow.
Happy hunting, hope you find your "soulmate" :)
    Andy

thanks again Andy355 - will do some further digging regarding the spec of the car. Already done the wanted ad on the FOC website - no response other than a dealer who has a black one at the moment (not 5k more, but 15-20k more, not willing to pay that price). It is because I am after black that I am having trouble sourcing one, and as I said earlier the one's I have seen are not up to my standard. Anyone know of a black 355 spider for sale please let me know.

also worth looking at www.mobile.de for german cars, only saw one black on there today - note search under 355 not f355. There is also an italian mag like top marques (or there used to be anyway- havent seen it lately).
