Looks way easier than actually removing the buttons, and if yours aren't scratched too deeply it might turn out quite well.
I'm sure that it can work...... but it's all in the prep. I don't like the idea of spraying inside the car and risking over spray.
Yeah no way will I try this. Thank goodness I don’t need to……..YET It’s part of the Ferrari tax to get them re done professionally
The alcohol will strip the coating off the backplates on the switch panels to the sides of the cluster. The backplate is white plastic under the black coating.( Ask me how I know, flat black paint fixed it ok). If you are not too vigorous with the alcohol and just get the surface of the sticky off, it might be ok. The difficult ones are the surrounds to the rt and Lt TFT screens. The alcohol will remove the anti reflective coating on the screens if not disassembled and separated. Those are real sticky but since I dont touch them all that much decided to leave well enough alone. The rear view mirror I removed and scrubbed all the stick coating off down to the black base plastic and that is where I left it. Satisfied with that.
I'm saying the ONLY way to do them properly is to remove them. The sticky coating on most parts wraps around the sides and sometimes rear of the parts. Wiping something, alcohol, a cleaner of some sort on those parts to loosen the sticky, is in turn dripping down and around inside that component. That liquid will start to corrode the inside of the parts, corrode electronics, etc. I have seen it 100 times. On top of the fact, that goo will start making it's way to the sides and seeping out eventually, once the inside temps get hot and humid. Not to mention spraying inside the car? You freaking kidding me, where is that overspray going??
I think the spray to dry editing in this video is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. No way in hell would I want to try this on my car.
So you're saying that it's worth doing if the owner is willing to go through the trouble le of removing the parts that need to be redone.
This is great, it's almost as good as the magical rattle can spray on paint scratch remover I've seen the ads for. I'm sure you can cover up the sticky but the problem is still going to be there.
I completed something similar in my car. Except I removed and disassembled all buttons. It took a very long time to remove all panels and clean each part. The result turned out perfect, just make sure to be ready to spend countless of hours on a project like this. FYI. The bumpy road button on the steering wheels is different, so you don’t want to spray clear on it, as it will dissolve the graphic on the button ( all other buttons are fine) I’ll add photos of my results
To be clear "yes" you can do this (I did, there is info in some of the sticky threads about my clean up) but #1 you need to take things apart, and #2 don't use rattle can paint if you expect it to last for any length of time, #3 be aware that different parts have different tolerances as to the base coat,( the part that has the letters etched into it) wiping away. I went into mine thinking if I destroyed some of the lettering I would send them away to get new laser etching, and I did ruin some so Ii did send those away and they returned looking fantastic. The parts that I was successful in not ruining the graphics also looked great after I resprayed with automotive grade flat clear.
But they also won’t be the soft touch material they originally were. They’ll just be plastic painted buttons like any Toyota. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Parts are painted, NOT colored plastic like a Toyota, big difference. Original parts soft touch which fails - $$$$$$ - Refinished parts that won't fail $$ - - I guess if you have money to pi$$ away, have at it. I like money..lol
As I would look at my perfect finger print impression in the gooey main controller I would fondly recall complaints on other forums about not having soft touch plastics . Eventhough the finish is not soft touch after repair it still has a quality feel about it, and just puts the car interior enjoyment back to where it should be.
I removed all mine and sent them off to a real doll factory and had them done in cyber skin. Some get warm when I touch them and other ones moan. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
