    Texas!
    WOW!

Funny, I was at MSR Houston yesterday, and we were talking about the old Can Am cars. You know, 900 HP, 900 pounds of torque.

But compared to these cars: GREAT GAWD ALMIGHTLY! :)

How about an Anglia pic. Built a model of an Anglia dragster as a kid, and still want a real one.

I do not remember the type car but it was driven by Bob Bondurant in Can Am races.......I will try to find out the type of car for you,,,and me....

    April 28, 1965. Lola-Chevrolet T7 Mk 1.

Intakes were cross-ram connecting to side draft Webers. Intakes were later sold to Roger Penske to use on his T7. Wing was added later and connected to the carburetors. Wing blew off at Riverside.........taking the carbs along...

Did you ever race/attend races at the old I-20 Dragway near Winona, Texas? I went to school there and my freind lived across the highway from the site, said it had been used as runway, etc. as well as dragstrip. I think an oil & gas company owns the property now, but the track would be worthless as it has been neglected for at least 25 years.

In the early '90s, I ran at Cedar Creek (1/8) and Hallsville (1/4) in Harrison County.

Friends of the family actually owned Hallsville and sold about 7 or 8 years ago.

Never raced there. I ran a lot out in west Texas. Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, Hobbs New Mexice, Wall (San Angelo), Odessa, Midland and the like. Also ran at Green Valley, Dallas International Motor Speedway (Only around for about 4 years in Lewisville), and some tracks in Arizona and California but never reached Winona..........

Abilene started out as the county airport as did Big Spring. Many of the older tracks in the beginning were airports. Fact is, I was the track record holder in my class at Pyote dragway near Pecos, Texas when it closed so I can truthfully say that I am still the track record holder there (in my class) and have held the record for 39 years. I ran there once in 1969, set the record and never went back. The track closed about 1973 or so. No one else ever had the chance to make a run at it............

The record? AHRA Formula 7 D/SA......17.93, 81 mph..........Some record huh. It was a car I drove to the track, took the spare tire and ice chest out of the trunk, raced and loaded things up and went home.. 1958 Ford Skyliner with a 352 cubic inch V8 with a 2 barrel carburetor. That barge could not get out of its own way. I have to laugh to think it ever held a class record but how many other people do you think would actually take anything like that to a track....But, I was young and dangerous and wanted to race. I morphed into much better cars as time went on. Last car in in my avatar,,,'23 Ford t-bucket altered roadster.....

I thought the 17.30 time I turned in my mother's '67 T-bird at Green Valley was slow until I read this. All I did was flip the air cleaner cover over so you could hear the 4-barrell. Friends bug was running in the 20's.

Spectacular Willys photos! Thanks for sharing them with us.

The "Big John" '41 Willys no longer exists, although he helped build a perfect replica of that car last year before his death. Think he was about 80 years old. Two of the original "Stone,Woods & Cook" '41 Willys do still exist. One still has the original '60s blue & white interior. It was featured in a recent issue of Rodder's Jounrnal Magazine. Sub-10 second ETs in the quartermile in the ealry '60s on 9" wide rear tires was quite an accomplisment...had to be fearless. Doug "Cookie" Cook died several years ago and K.S. Pittman is in a nursing home. Some famous A/GS gasser drivers who are still active at nostaglia events are J.R. Thompson, "Ohio" George Montgomery and the Mallicoat Brothers.

    Jungle Pam rocks!

Thanks for the update Greg. I did not know K.S. is in a nursing home. I knew about "Cookie". I guess it is getting about the time that all the guys who began drag racing history are nearing the end of strip and are about to go "through the lights". We lost Dick Landy and Ronnie Sox as two very notable drag racing legends. I really miss the kind of "run what ya brung" competition from the early altered wheelbase factory experimental cars.
I was at Green Valley in 1964 and had the pleasure to see Stone-Woods-Cook, "Ohio George" Montgomery, Big John Mazmanian and K.S. Pittman all competing. The A/GS class had about 16 cars in it if my memory serves me correctly.
