That's where probably ferrari gets it right. Look at the new sliding aid in the Speciale. It's not all about lap times but about the experience and that's why even if the performances are not at the absolute forefront, they still win most of the comparison tests they enter. After all the fastest way of getting from point a to b is the air.
Aston's CC100 Speedster Concept is the best styling exercise I've seen in a long time. Simple and emotional. If money were no object, and if I didn't want to be risky, I would build something of similar spirit. If I wanted to be risky: I'd take the highest quality personality test I could find. Then I'd hire a fringe artist to paint 3 canvases in any way he chose based on how my personality understands reality. Each canvas would have its own theme: Aesthetic beauty; emotional desire; passionate action. Then I'd ship those canvases to Horacio and tell him to empty a design studio of everything except the canvases. He would have two years to design and build a car based on his inspirations from the artwork. I would encourage him to pull from his own personal inspirations, and to combine those with what he sees of my personality in the artwork. I would intentionally not see the car until it was finished.
Were money no object, I'd love to do a detailed documentary / TV series on a restoration for an older, classic car -- say a Miura or SWB. Sort of "This Old House" for car dorks.
Mine would be a Black Enzo with a targa top. (Ignore the engineering problems. This is fantasy.) Also a VandebBrink 599 with a convertible top and a Novitec package to get it to 1,000 HP. http://www.vandenbrinkdesign.com/current-projects/599-gt-convertible
Anyone for a three wheeler? Imagine a ferrari built one with three wheels drive, two in front and one in the back. After all the Nissan delta wing works quite well with three corners.
I grew out of 3 wheelers when I was a little boy... Ooh I love that! Just a shorter overhang is all that's needed really! F430 manual base, hang a 599 V12 in the back. Any more pics? Win!
I would take Pinin's Maserati Birdcage concept from a few years ago and make a ground up revised version. I thought that was stunning.

+1. Pure driving enjoyment is the goal. Why adding more unreliable (long-term eg after 10yrs) electronic driver aids ?
It would have to be a mad hot rod entirely made of communist era East block vehicle parts. No modern stuff, for sure. Generally, a ZAZ (Zaporoshets) 968 body with chopped roof and air-cooled Tatra V8 engine in the back. Other option would be to construct a replica of long scrapped Wolseley Gyrocar, by all means probably the worst vehicle ever made.
Why the H16 and not the v16? The H16 was an utter piece of rubbish and only managed to win one race in a Lotus driven by Clark but nobody actually expected it to finish. Now the v16 was a failure too, but oh what a sound! Pete
All in all, though, if I could build one of the concepts first demonstrated to a car show and then never built I would go for the original jag c-x75 with gas turbine/electric engines.
Mid mounted flat 12 engine. Monicoque construction with built in safety cell/cage. Designed by industry insiders who know car design better than any student, or youngster ;-) Full ground effect a-la Group C / IMSA era aero, no external wing; but designed in conjunction with race car. I wouldn't be adverse to a 4 rotor engine Other ideas that aren't a ground - up build... 7 Liter Prius TWR Jaguar V12 "Silk Cut" era powered XJ220 5.8 Liter s/c powered RS200 Packard 299 re-built.
I don't agree: The Ford GT90 May Have Been The Greatest Concept Car Ever ... this was: http://www.pininfarina.com/en/birdcage_75th/
So, what on the 75th Anniversary Birdcage, what part of that car was the original testbed for 10's of thousands of production components? While the GT90 was based on a XJ200 chassis, the V12 ended up in every V12 Aston Martin... and was all new.
Isn't the Birdcage on a Enzo chassis? And why does the fact that the GT90's components being a test bed make it more awesome as a concept car? Remove the word concept and I can see your point ... Pete
Open top with central seating All carbon V12 mid engine 500hp/2500lbs Trans optional between stick/clutch and paddles
Not so much, it is the fact that what they made for the concept also proved so useful for production vehicles.
