I would say from my knowledge of the '80s, that there were local DVLA offices, and no doubt a little charm might have helped with a choice of numbers. Perhaps easier in Scotland - I'm not sure whether there was an office in Perth, but there certainly used to be one in Dundee.

The cherished number plate market was also I think in it's infancy, if it existed at all. He sourced two 4-character plates for the cars, one of which was on one of the Daytonas and the Boxer - 36SF. I think it is now on a short wheelbase 250. SF was an Edinburgh suffix, so it was local, and of course was perfect for a Ferrari.

He told me a tale of attempting to buy a 2 character plate ending in 1. He had spotted it on a very clapped out car at a sheep sale - possibly Oban. He left a note of the car asking if the owner would consider selling the car to him. He received a phone call from a farmer who knew he was and was told in succinct agricultural language that he wasn't getting the number plate!

That's lovely to hear. He was a remarkably shy person, but enjoyed corresponding with many people, especially those who shared his love of cars. I'll have a look when I have a chance at what records there are - I am scanning the correspondence file, but also have the invoices too. I'm sure he probably sent you everything there was, but there might be something else.

Thanks very much, it would be much appreciated if there is anything else. As it happens a friend of mine owns OWG 5M. Would it be possible to have a look for that car as well? No rush of course but much appreciated.

I know it is in the wrong forum, and I will direct subsequent posts to the correct fora, but I thought it might please some to see the circle of life at work.

After 50+ years since my first experience of Ferraris, I have become one of their customers. I know the Roma divides opinions, but then so did the Dino. I think and hope my father would be pleased.

I am the kid. In ‘71/‘72 I’m pretty sure you couldn’t buy children’s Ferrari branded jackets. So it was badges. Very proud of that jacket I was!

    I've just seen this thread.
One of the Azzurro Dinos is mine!
I've owned her for nearly 40 years and have gaps in the early history.
The registration is JPC 64K which she has from new, shown in the photos but listed as JPB in the listing; chassis 02908.
Originally the Maranello photographic car shot by Neill Bruce and featured in many books and one road test by Top Gear Scotland magazine; heres the connection!
Sold by Maranello to Hexagon and then the trial has gone cold for about 7 years. Id love to know more about her!
    Brilliant thread!

Martin, as I understand it your car, JPC 64K, chassis 02908, was the Maranello Concessionaires press car of the time. It was photographed next to the first demonstrator that my father had probably because they were both being shown nearby at Gleneagles. Fantastic that you have it - I have a number of photographs of the two of them together that I can send you.
