I was driving through Zurich city the other day, and on a congested road I saw a beautiful car, and it was a 456. I thought "wow, that car is pretty".

When I got home I check the internet and see they are quite cheap, it is the 550 and 575 that command the big price tag.

I think "I should own one". Then I think "Excellent investment", "it has back seats", "12 cylinders", "pop up headlights", "manual transmission", and my brain goes on forever.

So my question is, is it mad to want a 456?

William- Perfectly normal. Beautiful design, big V12, relatively easy to maintain, if expensive to maintain. Go for it. Most of the issues with the 456/456M are well understood and there are solutions for each. Plus, the values are appreciating.

I have one, had it for 8 years and every time I drive it a big smile appears on my face.
it is a 20+ yrs old car, but the lines are timeless, the performance is still exhilarating, but of course one needs to keep up with the maintenance.
As a comparison, it is like to maintain 2 BMW with a 6 cylinder 2.5 liter engines.

The 456s are great for sure. With this excelent "info-bank" (a lot more know how here than the average Ferrari workshop), it is a breeze to own one. I was looking for a Maserati 3200 GT a few years back, because I had one some years before that, but I reconsiddered andbought the Ferrari instead. More expencive, but the quality is very good and cheaper to own in the long run. And more exclusive and faster too... Make sure the headlights are perfectly aligned relative to the hood/bonnet. It is a very fine margin in between, and can be difficult to get properly adjusted. The windows cal also be a nightmare, as the mechaism is not really the best. There are modifications that take care of this issue once and for all though. Just bring your gas card :)

There are issues with either GT and the M nothing that cannot be sorted, find a sorted car and you will not look back.
Use the search function in the 456 550 575 section if you have a question we have all been there before.

Looking for a buyers guide this one is will help.

No way, get the hood scoops.
There's something classic about the more square interior finishes too.
Even though it may break more...

Oh boy, let's get out the gloves. :D

Later, M, models are often the result of design and manufacturing flaws from the originally introduced car being discovered and addressed (e.g., movable spoiler, Sony audio system, overheating, etc.).

Putting another 100 miles on the car today for my work commute.

I saw my first 456 (it was an M) in the wild a few weeks back in San Diego. It was gorgeous blue (Azzurro California, I think). I'd love a 456M, the wife wants a Cali. I gotta keep gathering ammo as to why I "need" a Ferrari V12…T

Absolutely true, but the curve of car value-able-ness states: that while the newest is the most valuable (for all those reasons) given time, the first gen will catch and then pass the latter in value, and desirability.
That time has not yet come... yet.

I submit for your consideration the Ferrari 308 Vetroresina, the Dino 206, shall I go on?

My late 456M is not in need of any "sorting" but it is also a keeper as is the Aston DB-7 and the Jags. The Jags are daily drivers but the Aston is going to go through the roof along with the 456M. Over 100K in the next couple of years.

Why mad? The 456 is one of the most beautiful Ferrari ever built and probably the best value for a V12 to date.

Go for it and go for a manual M Version!

Yes they're really great to drive and use. A real hoot! Once you have the little niggles worked out, seats, windows, radio, shock actuators and fuel system. Oh and a more open exhaust.
The M versus non-M GT desirability debate has been beaten to death on this forum and I think it has resulted in a tie :), with cosmetic preferences and relative rarity as most important denominators.
Anything that breaks on the Ferrari Sony sound system of the older model can be fixed, I can help out for anyone interested.

You might be mad but you will have lots of company on this site! I may be the newest member of the tribe having purchased mine a couple of weeks ago in the US. The combination of looks, performance, cachet and price were what convinced me to rejoin the Ferrari community after a long time away.

    Regards
