My counsin's significant other, who knows I am a big F-car enthusiast, wanted to know if she could look through my humidor and grab a cigar to smoke while a few of us enjoyed a card game. All of us picked out our cigars.

I said, "hey, try one of those cigars with the Ferrari band on it, they were rolled 18 months ago for the French Quarter Classic and are really nice.

She grabs the cigar, then 10 minutes later says, "So, tell me more about these Mustang cigars!"

Immediately it dawned on me that she knew they were Ferrari-type cigars, but made a small error in speaking.

So maybe some people who make the mistake do so just beause they have such a strong assocation with horse emblems and Mustangs. Because she knows the Ferrari obsessions, clearly.

    Just an observation :)

That could explain it I've never quite undertsood the confusion. The mustang and Ferrari horse look nothing like eachother other than the fact that they are both horses.

Funny you mention this I heard some kids at the Vancouver Italian and French car show call a Ferrari 550 a mustang.

Precisely, because this individual has been around me for enough time to fully suffer through hearing me speak about F-car history and ramblings to be aware of the general idea of what Ferrari represents(to me at least).

    Silly horsey ;)

So, do we have poney-cars then? I wouldn't mind the mustang association if folks would stop calling mine a Fiero... sigh. -m :)

Just my opion, but shouldn't the newer V-12 Ferrari's be more distinctive? Nobody ever mistakes a Lamborghini for anything else... The older Ferrari's have a more distinctive style, like the Boxers and Testarossa's. The 308, 360 and 430 are also unique, but the 456, 550, 575, and 599 look too much like all the other high-end luxury cars.

IMHO, look at how many thousands of Mustangs are out there and how few Ferraris. Someone who is not into cars will just see a horse and associate it with the many mustangs running around.

Yeah...I think it's just brand association with the "horsey" on the nose. I was once sitting at a light, first in line in traffic. Across the crosswalk come two women in their 50s.

One says to the other, "What kind of car is that?" (I had my windows down and sunroof open - they could've just asked me)

The 2nd leans down, stops, looks closely at the emblem on the nose of my car that clearly reads, "Ferrari", and says back, "It's a Mustang."

I guess the old saying is true - you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

Last year, while at the car wash, one of the employees pointed at my chest and said, "So you like Mustangs...?"

Actually the mustang was named after the P-51 Mustang. When 95% of the people didn't have a clue what a P-51 was, they just gave up and stuck a horse on them.

I bet that Ford named the Mustang "the Mustang" because they were still upset about Enzo backing out of the deal when Ford wanted to purchase Ferrari. They figured that at some point in time, enough people would confuse the Cavallino with their mustang logo and they'd have their secret revenge....

Of course, their well known revenge came a lot earlier....It was called the GT40.

    Cheers,
    Aaron

I don't know if this true or not (not a big Mustang guy or Ford for that matter) but when Hayden Fry was the coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes (essentially the Pope of Iowa, where I'm from) he told a story several times about when he first started out coaching football at SMU (nicknamed the Mustangs) he couldn't recruit big athletic players to the school so he went the other way and got small fast, shifty guys. I think SMU may have beaten Michigan (hazy on how he came to be on Ford's radar) during the early 60's and a person of Ford took note of this. Hayden claims the Mustang was named after his swift little football team. He was presented one of the first Mustangs ever, in SMU's team colors. He said as a young coach starting out that was a godsend and drove that car everywhere and eventually into the ground, now wishing he would have kept it.

I don't think it's a question of similiarities between the car but rather just how dumb is the average American?

My contention is that it is not a matter of intelligence, rather, the horse emblem to most Americans is STRONGLY associated with Mustang.

Which is why my cousin's girlfriend made the error despite knowing how much of a Ferrari freak I am.

So I'm not the only one who has experienced this - A couple of months ago on one of those rare weekends with nothing pressing/pre-arranged to do - I have the 355 and TR at out the same time for a wash. The couple passing by on a stroll state "nice mustangs but why do you need two."

We were at a gas station once and a lady and her husband were standing behind the car (where a majority of the emblems are) The husband says to my husband " hey, is this the new mustang?" to which my husband replied, "no, it's actually the old Ferrari", with a smile. The husband looked at his wife and says "yeah, it's a mustang"

What do you do? Shake your head and laugh....
