Brian, this looks awesome. Any updates? If possible, I’d love to hear a sound clip!

    Good luck on the install!

Thanks Ruben. Not installed just yet. Working to get the flanges welded up and the pipes extended at the ends to fit the cats. Working on it.

I can't wait to hear it.

New (used) lift installed today. Now ready to do some cutting and test fitting. But first I threw the X1/9 up there to check out the soon to be removed gearbox.

    Hi @bjwhite Brian
Just wondering if you are finished with the exhaust.

It seems my rear mufflers are shot, the sound of my exhaust is not nice at all and the cost of replacing all the system is prohibitive.

My mechanic recommends to do straight pipes from the heathers to the back and use stingless steel mufflers with my original Ansa tips.

I like the idea but I don’t want to let go of the vintage v12 sound that I would like my car to have.

    What are your thoughts.

It's really a mater of personal preference, my brother's 365 does not have the middle section and he likes it a lot, whereas I've kept the complete exhaust. On the positive side
    1) the exhaust under the car is easy to damage, so a straight pipe is far less troubles
    2) the sound is really nice when cruising on the countryside.

Overall my brother considers the car feels more like a "proper Ferrari"...

This is however really noisy on the highway (130kmh). After 2 hours on the highway I suffer from ringing in the ears. Your mileage may vary, but whenever I take the little kid with me I just give him a Bose QC headphone. Needless to say the lady never gets in this particular car.

My car has stainless exhaust with all mufflers. This is slightly noisier than stock (a bit more treble), does not sound as good as straight pipes at low speed, but much more comfortable. I Like it better.

Not yet. After I pulled the engine/gearbox out of the X1/9, I dropped the Fiat off the lift and got the 400i up in the air just yesterday. I then removed the center sections in their 85% installed state which was a hell of a job in its own right. So now the car is up on the lift with the rear sections installed but no center sections at all.

I'll be installing the balancing pipe caps (the side holes in the headers) here in the next few days and then mocking everything up with measurements. Then I will need to have a couple pipes bent of course because the difference in width between the Magnaflow cat input flanges and the width between the header outputs. Then some welding, and then hopefully it goes together without much fuss.

Thank you for this information, very valuable.

I am having trouble finding the doughnuts that go between the heather and the cat, I purchased a set in the UK through Eurospares and I received a set 3 inches when the car calls for 2”

Do you have any recommendations where to find them in the USA ?

    Thank you.

Exhaust center sections removed. New cat sitting on top.

BTW Ricardo, these cars didn't have cats from the factory. The o rings I pointed you to on Eurospares are the factory parts between the headers and the center exhaust sections. If those don't work for you, then what you have isn't factory stock (and if you have cats, then what you have isn't stock).

Best bet will be to start a new thread here with pictures and/or take it to an exhaust shop--they should be able to help.

    Hi Brian
The parts that received from Eurospares were too big for the header.

They are working with me to sort this out.

My center resonators were made by Timevalve si the size of all tubing has not changed.

Thank you much for your comments.

So wow, an embarrassing amount of time later, I'm back with more updates. After accidentally breaking a polyamide line when working in the engine bay, I got a newly fixed line--sincere thank you to the person who helped, you know who you are. That is now installed and when i started it again I noticed the accumulators were weeping.

So I replaced them with new, and replaced the fuel filters with new UFI units.

Once done I'm back on the exhaust project, which has been, well, exhausting. ugh.

Going to replace fuel pumps also. Right side pump pulling just enough to blow the 15A fuse after a few seconds. Still seems to work but sounds labored.

FCP Euro has the correct Bosch part number (listed for a Mercedes 280E) on sale now for $125 each. Buy 'em up gents.

Also getting a new right side fusebox connector.

FWIW I have straight pipes on my C/4. Very little difference from the mufflers I took off. Just the resonators remain. I know a guy that did the same thing to his GTB/4. Love the sound. Obviously, we don't have cats to deal with.

I technically don't NEED cats, but I thought about it being a nice and "easy" way to create crossover and cut down on smell.

So you did straight pipes with no crossover at all? So four three cylinder engines instead of two six cylinders? :)

Crossover on each side.... but not connecting left and right cylinder banks. "Two six cylinder engines".
Took the SS system off (I believe it was a quicksilver unit since it was installed years ago in the UK) because of ground clearance (maybe 2") concerns and the fact I did the same thing on my first C/4 with little change to the sound. I wish I had an underside pic to show you.

Here's the mufflers that were removed. If anyone wants them, they can have them.

So you kept the rear most center muffler and the rear resonators? Yeah wow, would love to see a pic of what you're running.

Must be loud for sure... When driving my brother's 365 with straight pipes I facilitated my bose QC to the kid as he was scared by the noise! (He never complained about the 400i stainless exhaust)

Straight pipes from the headers to the resonators. Not loud at all. Your results may differ, however.
Drove the car yesterday with the windows down. Pleasant sound even under full throttle.
35K original miles on the car. Motor never out and compression readings around 150 psi on each cylinder. A fresh motor would probably be louder.
I am out of town right now. Will try to get some pics when I get back.

Hmm, this is interesting, and I feel a little foolish for not considering it before.

I had thought that X-pipes were more a thing with V8's - I have a Maserati GT Sport and that came with an x-pipe stock, and after 10 years of owning it I still literally laugh out loud every time I start it. Never thought about what effect they would have with a V12.

When I bought my 412 the exhaust had seen better days and, to me, sounded a little too muted. I'm lucky to have a manual, and following a "medium" engine refurb I'm confident/stupid enough to drive it with considerable enthusiasm. Rowing it up through the gears is a spine tingling privilege, if you like that sort of thing.

    Which I do...

Initially I simply put 4 straight pipes all the way through, but it was little too loud, and smelled too much like the 1960's:

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/G03CY0b5Cwc

Then I added double-pipe high flow cats and a small muffler on each pipe, and that's how it has stayed. It never occurred to me until now that the original had crossovers and that I'm instead running 4 3 cylinder engines, in terms of sound. It's pleasing enough to my ears, if not to those of my neighbours, for me not to mess about with crossovers, but I do wonder what difference it would make.

I'm sure there is someone here who can speak in terms of pitch and perfect 12ths, but to me it sounds pretty good.

Quick cold start video (and being gentle):

Crossover pipes between left and right do make sense on a crossplane crankshaft. On a flat crankshaft, the sound is perfectly symetric, so not sure about the benefits.

Some swiss cars were fitted with a crosspipe and additional silencer under the trunk.
