btw, not to scare you too much, but i bought a great 2001 car with 1k miles on it in 2006.
i used it as my daily driver for nearly 9 years and 35k km.
i put at least $30k of repairs into it over that period, and still sold it at a loss.

these are very interesting and subtle cars, but they made so few of them, and there are some one-off parts, that you do end up having to deal with a lot of bs.
your entry is low enough that it may not bother you, but i reckon you will spend 20-30k before you have confidence to take it on an extended road trip

30K in 9 years is not that bad in my book.
Would I assume 12K is from 2 major services?

5K from yearly fluids, consumables over nine years.

I venture to guess bad valve guides? I believe that's at least a 10K job.

Can’t speak for the 91 Jettas but the e36 M3s have several problem areas.

i am talking about shocks, radiator, alternator, fuel pump, water pump, window adjustment, ecu's, and loads of little stuff.

The selling at a loss issue seems to be a common experience in 456M ownership.;)

I agree that alternate wheels options are close to non-existent for the 456. Considering this particular car is a bit of a project, consider commissioning a set through https://www.augmentwheels.com/.

I've been following them and they've done a nice job re-imagining period-correct classics through a modern lens. I would love to see how they could reinvent the 456 5-spokes.

Interesting. Your Novitec wheels seem to be the same as the wheels on the 456 Cab that I was drooling over. :)

I think ya darn near stole it. But then again $19k plus shipping plus whatever you've put in it so far plus whatever you pay in taxes plus plus plus....it adds up. But since you are not a purist and don't insist on Genyouwine Ferrari parts and you do work yourself, you will get away a lot cheaper than if someone bought it and sent it to the local shop to be brought up to snuff. I might have thought about grabbing it at $19k. Am I safe to assume you are hinting that you bought it from BHCC?

The more I look at the 456, the more I would like one... the photo earlier next to the FF really shows how much of an evolution of the 456 and it’s predecessors the car is, more so than looking at a 612 (which I owned for a number of years and loved). The novitechs are indeed a great wheel choice for the car

They are really elegant cars , Ross has more experience than me but I was told to go for the latest car you can find as build quality improved through the model life and as Luca got a grip.

Stickyness and a reluctant pop up light were my only issues.

That said I love up pop lights, real 20th century exotic car cool.

Oh, absolutely, and I know Ross has more experience with his cars than I’ll ever be lucky enough to learn! I don’t think I’ll be about long enough to grab one, and they are like rocking horse poo in the UK, good ones at least, so I suspect it will end up an unrequited dream

I mean, pop up lights are sexy, but not THAT sexy ;)
