Yesterday, I completed my first IronMan (Louisville) in 11 hours, 44 minutes. It was one of the most exciting, memorable, and joyous experiences of my life. I felt great the entire day and crushed my 13hr goal.

Unfortunately, my bike was stolen 10 days before the race (right out of my living room!) and I had to borrow a friend's bike. The bike (a Cervelo P3) was fast and quite an upgrade from my aluminum Felt, but I only put 20 miles on it before the race. My back, not used to the more aggressive aero position, was aching badly by mile 50. Got a drafting penalty on the bike as well.

I felt fantastic on the run. Miles 1-6 were easy. Miles 6-18 felt good, but I slowed down purposely because I was worried about hitting the "wall" at mile 18/20. My biggest regret is being too conservative there as I ended up doing a negative split on the run (second half faster than first). When I reached mile 20, I felt better than I did at mile 12, so I increased to a 8:56mi/min pace on markers 20-25, then busted out the last mile very quickly (7:45min/mi). I was flying down the finish chute at a sub 7 minute pace, and the crowd was going wild for me! The finish-line rush was euphoric. Didn't cramp the entire day and felt fine after the race (went out to dinner and celebrated until almost midnight).

    RUN 26.2 miles
    4:41:04 (10:43 min / mi)

Awesome! I would love to complete a marathon. Doing a full Ironman is way beyond what I think my body could complete.
How long did you train for it?

Awesome job. I don't think I could dedicate the time needed to train to qualify for one. That's a serious accomplishment!

I started training last September, bought a bike and did my first tri in October of last year. I came from a weightlifting background and had limited cardio endurance. A year ago, I couldn't swim more than 50 yards in the pool and had never run more than 4 miles. But I had a good base for the bike, having built up leg strength from squats.

if you think you can, or can't; either way, you're right. I find it sad hearing people say "Oh, I could never do that".

congrats to the OP for reaching his goal - nicely done.

it will take me 2 years of training to just finish! :) will take me a year to get back where I was and then another year to go past that. :) my 6'1" 210 pounds don't do well on the longer events. :)
