    I have just received the "brake reservoir fluid cap" safety recall letter. It says, "The vehicle's electric parking brake can be used as an emergency brake when the vehicle is in motion. See your Owner's Manual for further information." I'm not so sure how that's done even after looking at that section in the manual. Does it mean pulling on the "P" button?

    When driving at any speed, pull and HOLD the electronic parking brake switch and don’t release. The brake will immediately engage and begin slowing the car down to a controlled stop. Once you start holding, keep it held toward you until the car stops. It is not a violent stop or anything, and is safe and important to try it out to gain confidence in the system.

    Next time you’re driving, give it a try at around 30mph when no one is behind you.

    Unfortunately the electric parking brake lever does not operate the parking brake if actuated while the car is in motion. It will attempt to apply the standard brakes using the ABS unit, if you already have a hydraulic failure you are not going to get much if any help.

    Have you confirmed this? My dealer said it activates the parking brakes?

    Your dealer is incorrect. Read your owners manual. This is the same function for any Bosch ABS system with an electronic parking brake.

    Here is the information directly from the training course. This is the same strategy for any of the Ferrari and Maserati Products with electronic parking brakes.

    D3.07 EPB electric parking brake
    the parking brake is engaged and released with the specific control on the dashboard, to the left of the steering wheel;
    the brake is actuated by an electric motor;
    the brake engages automatically when the engine is switched off (Autohold function);
    it may be used as an emergency brake with the vehicle in motion. In this case, the system applies the brakes to all four wheels
    for as long as the button is kept pressed, dialoguing with the ESP stability control system, which prevents wheel lockup;
    ensures optimized brake release dynamics for hill starts with the Automatic Vehicle Holding (AVH) function: when certain
    conditions are met, the system keeps the vehicle braked by releasing the brake shoes and callipers at different times,
    allowing the driver enough time to move the foot from the brake to the accelerator without the vehicle rolling backwards.

    You mentioned it with such authority and certitude! It shocks me to see that you have no personal experience in the subject matter at hand.

    Straight from the training literature for the 458 but others are the same. If you have a compromised hydraulic circuit this may or may not work. If there is no air between abs unit and the calipers it will likely work if the air has entered the system beyond the master cylinder it will likely affect how well this works.

    Emergency braking: This strategy is active only when the vehicle is moving and ensures that after a
    prolonged action on the EPB lever, the vehicle decelerates steadily (6 m/s²) without locking the rear wheels
    because in actual fact it is the braking node that deactivates the EPB and acts on the four hydraulic
    calipers.
    N.B: Given the dependence on the braking node and its deactivation in case of emergency braking,
    the rear wheels can no longer lock while driving.
