I have this pretty nice wood desk in my office. A few users at my house have seen it before. 3 drawers on the left, 3 drawers on the right, pull out writing bars above the drawers, and a center long drawer above the knees. For the life of me I can't figure out how to open the center long drawer. It has two knobs that don't turn or pull at all. The bottom drawer of both sides have a key that only lock that drawer. I can't find any secret latches under the center drawer or inside either the side drawers.

I figure this desk can't be that much different than other fancy wood desks. Maybe there is something broken, I have opened the drawer when I first got it. There is some type of lock latch keeping it from opening as it moves out a half inch until it hits it.

    Ideas?

    Thanks,
    rob

sometimes, you need to have another drawer open to open the center one.

If you have opened the drawer before, it sounds like something in the drawer has moved up and is keeping the drawer from opening. Have you tried using something like a bent paperclip in an attempt to catch whatever it is and hold it down so the drawer can be opened? I say this because I have a big office desk at home that has a stack of pull drawers on both sides and a long drawer in the middle and I have occasionally had some papers in the drawer move up and catch the desk, making it seemingly impossible to open.

Second the other draw open Rob. Try like the bottom right and see if the center one will then open. Good luck!

The file cabinet type drawers on the sides sometimes have interlocks so that only one drawer can be pulled out at a time, but if the center drawer doesn't have a visible lock, then there's probably not one.

Perhaps something inside the center drawer is positioned so that it's jammed against the desk lip when you try to pull the drawer out. I had a center drawer where a staple remover that was laying sideways in the pen tray near the front flipped up and caught so that the drawer couldn't be opened. I had to tilt and bump the desk so the staple remover jumped from the pen tray to the middle of the drawer before I could open it.

It is definitely a latch holding the drawer locked, I don't think there is anything in there. I tried all open and several combinations otherwise. I tried all closed. I tried all closed and bottom two locked. I've looked inside and around for a secret latch, maybe it is fool proof. :) I'm out of luck.

Try cutting the head of a chicken, and spilling the blood on the desk top.

Maybe a simple sacrifice will take care of it.

As you can see, I'm fresh out of ideas....locksmith

Maybe there is a button inside one of the top two side drawers?

Rob, I looked at the Stanley site. This maybe a bit extreme but if you can remove the exposed cams to the desk assembly, depending on the model (Modern, Provincia, etc..) you will be able to take out a single panel & access the drawer. I can come by sometime tomorrow & take a look at if you like.

Rob, just looking at my own wooden desk here, I don't know how all of these features work, I got the desk well used, but if I pull out the drawers, I have this vertical piece that slides up and down and has pins that can lock the individual drawers in place. On the inside of this piece, where my finger is pointing, there is a locking pin that goes inward to the center drawer. I'm betting that your center drawer is stuck due to something related to this. On my desk, there is a similar system on both the left side and right side drawers. See if that vertical slider is somehow stuck, or possible the locking pins are bent????

When was the desk's last major service? I think tmobileguy had a thread about his pins failing.

I wish it was just a desk!!

Rob, simply idea...drill the lock out...Do you really need the lock anyway or even have the key to it? (I'm guessing you don't have the key otherwise this wouldn't be a thread!)

There is no lock! Something elsewhere controls the latch, not by a direct key. Only locks are bottom two side drawers.

    Rob,
Get something thin enough to slip in the crack between the drawer and its surrounding frame. Move it left and right and up and down to try and locate where the lock/obstacle is. That would be good for starters...
I'm guessing that you've already run your hands all over the likely surfaces where a concealed lock might be located (Like Jeff B. has shown) right?
Finally, if the desk is of recent manufacture, contact the builder.
If it is old/antique, perhaps contact a dealer.
