I am tired of rebuilding small engine carburetors because of the ethanol in them. So.... I have heard Avgas 100LL would be a good replacement for these small engines. How do airport gas stations work? Do I just drive my truck somewhere and roll out a drum? How do you find out where the gas is?
At older small airports that sell fuel, there is often a fuel pump location that planes can taxi up to. More often then not today there is simply a fuel truck. Go into the FBO and ask to purchase fuel. He will ask where your aircraft is so he can send the truck to that location. You will tell him that you have cans or a barrel in your vehicle. Generally, that is the entire discussion and he will tell you to pull around to the hanger taxiway entrance and he will send the truck to meet you. People will often drive their car to their hanger space, so there is generally an auto gate. After you are fueled up, you go back in with your fuel slip and pay your bill.
You can do a search... There are a number of auto gas stations around with a no-ethanol pump. There is a site that lists them by state... are 3 in the Denver area for instance; or were last spring anyway. Much easier, I found.
I used to go to the Palo Alto airport to buy AvGas (100LL) for my race bike. Ran it for years. I would just pull up to the pump, swipe my credit card. Enter a bunch of xxxxxxx's when it asked me for a tail number, and fill up my 5 gallon gas can.
It may or may not be that easy. The FBO can get fined a large amount of money if they are caught selling avgas for non-aircraft use, so most of them aren't too excited about it. However, you should be able to find an airport with self-serve... Not that I would advocate that, of course...
List of automobile gas stations having ethanol-free gas - by state or province: http://pure-gas.org/ Much easier than trying to do an FBO. There are several of these sites; do a search. Why the H would you go to an FBO when you can get automotive gas without lead????? Plus, not good for your engine.
Specific gravity of avgas is wrong for car motors. You'll go from Carb problems to valve problems. I think the fix is adding a little oil, linseed? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
I buy at the one of the local FBO's here in Brooksville FL (It's a dollar a gallon less than the other , $5.25 recently) Go in tell them , they open the gate , and self serve there , asks for a tail number ( I used N500RP ) then payment into, and fill my jugs. Pretty easy . They do discounts on auto cross days on the closed runway
