used to be one in another life, for about 3 years....after two degrees I know of an FChat architect who drives a Daytona. Is that the other one?
I was also an architect in a recent past life. There are 2 fchat architects with Daytonas that I know of.
What better place...I can't think of one. More architects, please come foward! When we have all come out, then we can post our cars on a thread for architects and their Ferraris or dream Ferraris.
4th year Architecture student right here... I actually spent the summer in Italy on a summer abroad program, where we did a lot of analysis of Italian architecture. On the way from the San Cataldo cemetery (in Modena) back to Bologna, we drove past the Ferrari factory gates in Maranello (where we saw a 612 Scaglietti exiting!). We got to visit the Lamborghini factory in Sant Agata Bolognese on our day off, too!
practiced architecture for 12 years. then 6 years ago became a construction lawyer - pays great but I'm losing my soul fighting over money every day.
Lets show some of the things architects work on. I"ll start. This one we have now under construction. It's a total rehab from a 70's office building. It is scheduled to be completed in February 2005.
Interesting that architects = classic Ferraris, or so it seems. More pure lines? Or just the average age of our architects?
It used to be so much fun to make models. Back when I was studying architecture at Columbia U, you could actually smoke in the studio ! I have quit now, but this dates the experience (and me) appropriately.
I enjoy building physical models, too, but I'm starting to appreciate the benefits of 3D modelling with CAD. Right now, for my Site Planning class, I have to create a 3D model of Eastern Manhattan and Hunter's Point, extrude each building based on the Sanborn map, and have them completely rendered. It's a pain, but being able to animate a bird's eye view of your site is really effective in your presentations. Anyway, here's one of my projects from last year...
By the way, lukek, we can smoke in our studios as well, sometimes cigarettes are the only things that keep us awake for the 48 hours before our final crits!
Jaded, but I still with faith. Rijk, looks like a nice reuse project. I hope your previous lunch offer still stands once I make my way to the east coast. Although not on the same scale of Rijk's work, here are some things I'm working on at the moment (all in very preliminary stages). 1. A sketch for local newspaper interested in a facade renovation. 2. A sketch for a new restaurant by a marina. 3. A very crude sketch I did this morning for a proposed bank.
My Daughter, (18 yr, HS Senior) wants to be an Architect. She'll be applying to 3 Schools in Oct/Nov. That's Her Plan. Already doing as many prerequisites as the High School has to offer and Job Shadowing at a Firm that a fellow Service Club Member works for. If one of the Schools accepts her (H), I'll be like the guy on the commercial; " Ivy League, isn't it great", " Who'd a thought?" ( As he begins to sell everything to fund it, only to find out his wife got a 2nd Mortgage on the House.) Chuck
Rijk, Actually, we're all set if she goes to Cal-Poly, or U-Wash. ( UW, being her 1st choice, she love's Seattle ). But at the behest of one of her Teachers and a family friend who went to Harvard, she is going to apply. Can't hurt, right? ($$ Ouch!) Harvard, we understand is ranked 1st in this field, then Cal-Poly, UW is 17-18th (I think). She'll take is seriously and do good which ever way she goes, no doubt. Chuck
Chuck, The problem with reputations is, that they are always 10 years behind reality. I have not had any luck with the Harvard graduates I have hired. On the other hand the same outdated reputation will still open doors that are otherwise hard to open.
