Just watched How It's Made on the Pagani Huayra (sp?).

The announcer pronounced Modena as Mo-day-na.

    What is correct?

    Thanks

The announcer pronounced it correctly. As a general rule, Italians put the stress on the next to last syllable.

Not always. In Modena they say MO-de-na. Been there, heard that.

Sorry to disagree, but the first syllable is more like a short "O" sound, not a long vowel sound like in Moe.

Oh good grief, what difference does it make? If you pronounce it correctly the Italians will think you're a native. If you pronounce it incorrectly they'll think you're a tourist.

Either way they'll invite you to their home for dinner! :D

My Italian friends all agree...it's "MOH - de - nah". In other Italian words the stress is on the "day" (second syllable), but in this case the town, hence the model, is, for some reason, pronounced MOH de nah

From my Italian linguist wife, the correct pronunciation is: MOH-de-nah. However, friends of mine who were born there, and whose families have been there for generations tell me that the local dialect tends to go more towards: MUH-de-nah.

Italian here backing up the moh-de-nah. Should roll off the tounge.
