I am a a newby so bear with me:

    2 questions :

    1. can you point me to a FAQ or thread in this forum that explains in clear English (implied complaint about Ferrari manuals) how to check, align and set the crankshaft, cams, belts, etc.....I want to be sure the cam timing is a close as possible, and that the belts are in the right place...

    2. is the ignition timing fixed ? you can't rotate the distributors, and i see no adjustment on the Marelli ignition modules. Other than a new ignition system, are there any options for changing the timing ?

The short answer is "no". About the only thing you could do is physically relocate the triggering pins on the flywheel, but this would just shift the entire timing curve by the amount the pins were moved -- rather that providing a differently shaped timing curve (and even this is a hassle, because, for a small shift, the new hole location would overlap the old hole location so the old hole would have to be plugged before making the new hole).

I dont know of any "one" particular place that explains all the various timing (cam, flywheel, ignition) procedures. And to be honest, there are enough different ways to do it that it can become confusing.

Start with the OWM, then do some searches here on Fchat about valve or cam timing. You'll figure it out.

i had an electromotive ignition installed in my 81 after a failed digiplex fried 3 valves. the advance breakpoints are adjustable by potentiometers on the cover. the engine now has considerably more advance than stock and even with the mild cams on the gtsi the increase in power is noticeable. probably the best improvement you can make for the money, especially given what replacement digiplexes sell for. jon s.

I've read a lot of your posts, and happily defer to your specifics with respect to these kinds of queries...
however, my middle aged brain is shouting out about a multiple index map-for the ignition based-on the irregularities of the world gasoline supply available at the time(remember-in 1986 there were only140 unleaded fueling depots in WG-nearly all in the immediate proximity to MAJOR United States Military installations.)
The "swithching" from map circuit to another was based on the grounding out of a pin in the boot head, whilst creating an open for the map just selected for deletion.
Memory seems to jog the best diagrams and descriptions within a Ferrari internal service memorandum/bulletin???
Mondial-8...2 valve injected....not neccessarily for the USA market version...it was an OBSCURE publication, but it was REAL...4,5 or 6 maps toal, was applicable up throughout all the K and Ke systems...

AFAIK, the "ground a different combination of pins for a different ignition map based on version" feature was introduced with the MicroPlex ignition ECUs (Mondial 3.2, 328, 412, TR). I haven't ever seen that feature on any of the DigiPlex information (although, on the US DigiPlex, pin 6 is not ground when cold, but is ground when hot to provide different maps for cold vs hot) -- but if you can find/post something about it, I'd appreciate it.
