I don't like telling people I'm successful. I know the way Donald Trump is successful. You'll never become him or be able to use the same tools as him.

I hate the min wage debate. It makes some more fortunate kids not to want to work at all. Turns them into the appearance of entitled.

I wish people would support the public services more, including schools. Here we have several recreation places. Like an indoor pool. At the public indoor pool. They have all kinds of low cost programs around water activities for kids and adults.

A lot of higher ups at fortune 500 companies got their start working minimum wage jobs. McDonalds many a VP or even CEO started out at a corporate franchise as a cook. Note the fries are made by everyone involved. Managers even make fries when they get low on supply.

I hate people that have turned: "do you want fries with that?" into a negative.

I got a seasonal job in restock shelves when I was 20. It was my first real job and the only real job I've had in my life.

You see a min wage job at a place like The Gap or even The Ralph Loren or more commonly referred to as the Polo store. The people working there, come from all back grounds.

One of the wealthiest people in Canada and in the top 100 of richest people in the world. His start was selling bibles door to door during WWII as a young lad. To young to join the military. As crazy as it seems know, back then you could join at 15 years old.

His parents poor back ground and humble. His daughter worked in Seven Eleven. With many kids working for extra's in life. Could be a skate board their parents can't afford. Its not the board or toy. Its they want the better version the rich kids get.

You see I got things like boats and the best wind surfing stuff. Skies, etc. The best the stuff all kids wanted. It was handed to me. My cousin for her wind surfing stuff had to pick strawberries and her parents matched her funds to make sure she got the stuff she wanted.

Anyway, some of the regular employees I worked with. Their parents as in both doctors, etc. We also had kids with struggling parents. Parents teachers, etc.

Non of them had any clue, I could buy most things they couldn't even with their parents help.

Example of how I grew up. The house I grew up in was 610 Tsawwassen Beach Rd. This is a house for sale near it.

456 Tsawwassen Beach Road, Delta, BC, House For Sale | REW.ca

My house growing up was triple the size of the above listing. My house is one of the biggest on Tsawwassen beach. You see the way I grew up even a kid who's father is an oral surgeon, wouldn't fully understand my real world. To fit in. I avoided talking about my parents and money with them.

Flip side my uncle sold vacuums door to door in the 1970's. My parents "paid" their mortgage in the 1980's. Same time frame my aunt by marriage visited her family in England. The same time frame my cousins saw Disney Land.

On my Dads side it was another picture you see my uncle was in NYC as managing director of Marsh and McLennan Insurance.

I hate business owners who employ family and tell their entitles children in their normal jobs to stay and work harder then everyone else. No get them a job for min wage elsewhere.

My first car was a Mazda Miata, fully loaded and it was one of the very first to hit the roads when it first came out. My second car was a Corvette. When I was working in the stock room as a regular employee. All the guys had a crush on this cashier. She was drop dead good looking. She saw me parking my 1993 Corrado VR6. She said her boyfriend has the same car. My car was in the shop. I borrowed my younger brothers new 928GTS to get me to work. She saw me in the Porsche. She said your Dad has a really nice car. I said no its my younger brothers. She then told about the small repair shop her Dad owned. A very well known shop for older Rolls Royce's. I knew the shop and knew her father was. I found out she was part as a cashier and part time a head teller at a bank.

She was working for her first house. Even though she had a discount on mort products, she still needed her parents match the funds.

My point self made people often focus too much on the success of an individual. Some young adults seek out successful mentors.

The problem with self made rich. Is most got their by being noticed by people like me. It takes talent to know talent.

I wont tell you the living well off people I knew growing up. But obviously if an old cottage is almost $6million, imagine what a McMansion sized house with 4 acres on the water with 500ft of beach front is worth? You see only a hand full could beat me in successful fathers growing up.

My Dad was one of his stock broker. He made his first million in 1979. By being involved in this guys deal.

Free Article Limit Reached - The Northern Miner

Since my dad sold the most stock in that deal. In 1983. Murray Pezim asked the most connected and wealthiest stock broker in town to introduce my father to him. He wanted my Dad directly involved in his new deal. After that got around town The Pez looked for my Dad via a guy at a rival firm. They all knew my Dad was maybe not as rich, but was the richest broker in towns only real competition.

My Dad was one of his broker friends in London: Stockwatch Remembers Promoter Bruce McDonald | CEO.CA

He wouldn't met him. If Murray Pezim didn't come looking for the guy his main broker respected the most in town.

I also worked part time at my fathers office. I also worked part time in my dads friends office. I knew the people at most brokerage firms in town. I know even chairmen of the boards in firms. Since I don't respect him at all. I know about Gustra start at Yorkton Securities, not because of his later success with Lionsgate. I knew of Gustra when he was at Yorkton. I didn't know him, but my Dad did. In fact my Dad if he took Gustras offer in the mid 1980's, could have been involved in other Gustra deals. Even Lionsgate. Named after the Lionsgate bridge.

See its not about how they got rich. Its about being respected by people in the same industry. Its all connections in business and life. Human connection is how you succeed.

See I know its not all about Bill Gates. A family friend is an expert on Southeast Asian culture. As such he is a consultant to the Museum of Art in Seattle on the subject. Bill Gates is a long time patron of the arts. I'm not talking Bill Gates III either. His father was involved in the arts in Seattle as a prominent lawyer. Yes, Bill Gates is mega rich. But I know he got here, from Family and Friends supporting Microsoft when nobody ever knew the name. Trump got ahead the same way.

The vacuum salesmen uncle. Both my cousins are decent lawyers. Their spouses are lawyers also. Leading up to WWI, in Canada Germany was viewed much like Russia is today. Some people with Icelandic last names changed them to be less German. They also changed it to fit in more with our society. My cousin jokes that when he and his wife worked as Lawyers in Boston. Everyone thought she was Jewish.

The joke between us is. I knew the next obits Mans family and key employees. One of his key employees invited me personally to their new casino opening.

Raymond McLEAN Obituary - Vancouver, BC | The Vancouver Sun

People focus on meeting other rich people. When its actually much easier to be around everyone. You learn who can help you in life and in business that way. You can't be Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. Sure its a motivator. But its a more who you know and recognizing the people that help make you a success.

I know its better to know Bill Gates little people that help make his life better. Say you are a tech start up in Seattle. If low level Microsoft people want to meet your people. I know as CEO. We want our little people friends with "little" people at Microsoft. If you don't it will be an uphill battle like Apple.

Note the last obit didn't list the name of the companies he was involved in? Well that's because over his life time he was involved in 100's of them. There is people in Vancouver on this forum that might have worked for him and don't even know it. He was a multi billionaire before he started his most known success Gateway Casino. A Vancouver billionaire that even people in the Vancouver investment business don't know his name............ I never focus on the big people in industry. I focus on all.

By becoming friends with the cashier. If I wanted to start an exotic car dealer. Her father would be a valuable resource. I wouldn't even need to try and meet him. All I need is his daughters support as a great guy. I can ask her to ask him if any of his customer are looking for a 308. I might have one. Ask her to ask her father to keep me in mind.

Business is all about who you know.

You see I'm nice to every nice people I meet. Because the old adage you can't judge a book by its cover. At the hand car wash in Las Vegas. When an old guy is admiring me the much younger guys older Rolls Royce. I respect that he's admiring the car not me. If I came off as an entitled jerk when he wants to meet me and compliment my taste and car. I'm very respectful. Like this scenario did happen at the car place in Vegas. The guy who was admiring my Rolls was the owner of the place. Once I got to know him, he told me he was the owner. Gave me his business card. Said if I had any trouble with my car in Vegas go to the dealer and ask for the general manager. Show him my card and they'll take care you there.

For all I know he could have been Howard Hughes nephew. Didn't want a high profile life of a billionaire. He could have had a huge collection of Rolls Royce's at home.

People skills are the greatest resource. If you are rich and want your kids to really learn. Join the YMCA instead of the fancy gyms in Beverly Hills.

In addition to improving one's social skills, is to push yourself mentally. In the gym, you hear the expression, "No pain, no gain" if you are trying to improve your physique.

Same goes for mental acuity. Step out of your comfort-zone by doing something you would rather not be doing, such as volunteer-work or mentoring. You might be surprised at the doors that could open for you.
