Planning to place an ad soon. Try to find posts (w/o much luck) on private sale success stories. Seeking advice / success stories / experiences for how best to sell my 599 GTB privately. Also how to avoid common mistakes. It seems like it is very difficult to find buyers that are willing to deal w/ the owner directly. Is this true for both high end and low end Ferrari cars? Are there other Ferrari forums that I should use also?
I know the easiest way is to use the consignment route. But, my car is a good honest car and it should be a no drama transaction. Just try to save some money for myself and the buyer. Thanks in advance.

No it's easy. I've sold several high end cars including my last two Ferraris privately. My car (488)is on consignment with a dealer now for 2 months with only one offer which the financing fell through. I'd sell it privately except I will get a tax trade allowance for my incoming spider and the dealer want to try and sell to make some cash too obviously. However if they don't sell it soon I may be forced to sell again myself. THe opposite is actually true for good clean cars as many states cap sales tax for buyers if it's a private party so many folks want a private sale. I found that DuPont and eBay sell the best and have the biggest reach. I hear cars.com is good too but I've never had much luck on that site for some reason. Good luck.

I prefer to buy privately personally. Dealerships however might have people that are on a waitlist looking for a car like yours, potentially expediting the sale.

You'll get more privately too. If you're looking to trade up though there may be tax benefits from taking it to a dealer that would make that route be more appealing.

Post the specifics of your car. My dealer calls me every few months to see if I will sell mine. They say that they are getting many requests for nice 599's and they don't have enough. Maybe yours will hit a nerve with someone.

Believe it or not, I had a great experience using Autotrader recently & made a lot more on the transaction than I would have through consignment. However, the consignment route is definitely the safest to avoid scammers & riffraff...

Bought my car private party. Hassle with the title due to his financing but we got it figured out.

I think you should find a dealer who can at least do the paperwork/title/liens (release & place), for a modest fee (less than $1000)

that's for your benefit as much as a buyer's

for instance, if your car is not properly re-titled after sale you will be liable for anything and if the buyer uses a lienholder that would be on you!

I suggest finding an independent exotic dealer to help with the paperwork, if you want to do all that on your own, study up and prepare...

The big problem selling a Ferrari privately is all the flakes it attracts, many of whom cannot even afford a Ferrari.

Post on the fca/foc newsletter and other similar sites , lots of pics, I wouldn't mess with Ebay, agree to do the PPI and give it as a discount if the deal goes thru.

From my experience, Ferrari dealers will only offer wholesale price. Unless you have a special / high demand car.

Doesnt hurt to try a for sale ad here. Personally I have only bought and sold privately. You get a sense of the seller. If its an unkempt house, crappy cars parked on the lawn....pass. But if you pull up to a nice house in a nice neighborhood, the owner (most likely not a professional car seller) has the means to properly care for the car..

An average guy has a certain moral barometer. The average dealer sees you as tire kicker #5 for the day. Unless you have bought many Fcars from them in the pass.

As a seller, I ask some pointed questions to weed out the people who think they can get some wheel time for free. If you are serious, you have some sort of online presence that I can verify so that we dont waste each others time.

Case in point. When I bought my last Ferrari, I meet the seller at his office (Hedge Fund owner at his office in Beverly Hills. The car of interest was the runt of his collection. His underground garage had about 55 cars). He mentioned that he looked at my previous postings on Fchat and knew I had owned Fcars and was seriously looking for this model.

Walls came down and the sale was done. Happy on both ends years later. As a seller I want to get top dollar but I also want the buyer to know exactly what they are buying, warts and all.

I never bought from a dealer. I also prefer dealing with the owner.

Maybe this is a US thing?

You guys have Carfax, and for all its shortcomings it is better then what we have in Europe (ABFN, or A Big Fat Nothing).

    Recent car, Ferrari service record.......

I think most owners do not want to deal with buyers directly and hence opt for consignment....no?

I now sell on consignment, because I don't want to/have time to deal with potential buyers. Pains in the a$%^, fraudsters, time wasters, prevaricators, joyriders, head-scratchers, dreamers, semi-dreamers, part exchangers, disappearers, half-transferers ("I can get the rest to you next month").

A dealer opens you up to a much bigger market, as there are people who don't buy private.

I have bought Ferraris all ways, private, auction, dealer, main dealer. To maximise your chances privately, I would suggest a detailed and full description, high-quality photography, and your honest reasons (as explained above) for selling privately. If you are under warranty I'd say that is a big plus, and if you can yourself get a full inspection at a franchised dealership or respected and renowned independent, and have that report available and advertise it when you place your ad, again, you open up to people who would be too scared to buy private, even if tempted. Also, have the car serviced up to date, a dealer can get away with "will be serviced before sale", not a private seller. I know this goes against what many people say (that purchasers like to have the car serviced by their own shop) but again, it's a mark of reassurance and will bring people in.

Good luck, I hope I meet a seller like you when I buy privately.

It's always amusing to see Ferrari "owners" who are unwilling to pay fifteen dollars to list it on this site. Especially when they resort to all kinds of sketchy web hosting sites for posting photos. Got tiny pic? ;)

Bought my 360 through a private sale from an Fchatter, but I found it on his mechanics website. It was hassle free as he took good care of it, and his mechanic has a good reputation, and he had the title free and clear.

I also recently purchased a car from an fchatter. Easy transaction without any hiccups or issues.
