I know this is off topic but, I always thought that The Nascar Viagra sponsored Chevy should come in last isn't that the victory their looking for? You would think an engine failure would be the worst thing ..... "Viagra Chevy out of race early " =)

Right, Gordon was overwhelmed and Montoya was bored out of his skull.

I'm a fan of most automotive sports. Even Nascar when they're on the road courses. However all this snobbery about the technology F1 brings to Ferrari and how it impacts most of you Ferrari drivers is crap. Most of you aren't competent enough drivers on the street, let alone the track to notice. A spec Miata racer would do you just fine. If someone put you in a stock car you'd be just as slow as in a 360 or 430.

Edit. Gordon showed polite excitment, Montoya was nonplussed as driving a piss poor race car, poorly without all the latest technology and creature comforts exposed his limitations as a driver.

much of ferrari's appeal is about handling is it not?
imo going around in an oval... though it involves some...does not really involve that much handling capibilities(sp?)

There was a thread recently about Ferrari making a significant percentage of their revenues from marketing, not vehicle sales. NASCAR is a marketing machine in the US, so to that end, a Ferrari NASCAR could create more merchandise sales. I find NASCAR to be boring, but no one can deny the tremendous growth of the sport over the last decade. Perhaps the NASCAR crowd is not sophisticated compared to F1 fans, but they are far more likely to buy a Ferrari Beanie Baby or bottle opener. The cavier crowd is small, with fickle taste, mass marketing could help the bottom line. I think a major issue of avoiding NASCAR is the fear of losing to a Ford or Chevy and the impact that would have on the perceived superiority of the Ferrari brand name, although ridiculous since the cars have nothing in common other than body shape to their respected models.

Ferrari is exclusive for a reason. You really can actually come on here and say it will be good to have Ferrari beer bottle openers? :(

Everything has it's place. Even though I don't like Nascar, I can honestly say it should stay in it's place and F1 in their's.

Please no more selling out of Ferrari merchandise *sigh*

kind of tells you what kind of guy montoya is. i'm sure schumi would feel the same way too though.

well to answer the question, no point in Ferrari being in NASCAR. NASCAR aka stock car racing is all about people feeling in touch with the cars being raced. i saw something on the history channel about how little there really is in common with the street cars and the race car, but they keep the tradition 5 lug nut wheels because that's what the production cars use. f1 is pretty elitest which could be a small reason why it's not as popular in the US, or among NASCAR fans. i'm not a NASCAR fan at all, but a race car driver is a race car driver.

a while back i tried to compare lap times of a NASCAR and GT car on some road courses. i don't remember the details but i think the NASCARs came out ahead.

It's funny to read all this NASCAR bashing, especially the parts where some of you guys say they can't drive. The only people that say NASCAR (or IRL) drivers can't drive are people that haven't got a clue. Of course, it does help identify people that are intimately familiar with their rectal linings.

And this is coming from somebody that road races currently, and drove ovals nationally for 8 years.

Not that I'm a big NASCAR fan and I don't think Ferrari should do it but hmmmmm...........How many times have I heard that Ferrari only sells street cars to finance their racing???

Did Montoya clock a better lap time than Gordon? Or vice versa? No.

I agree while Ferrari would make a quick buck off the Nascar crowd it'd hurt it long term. They'd turn into another Porsche offering SUV's and cheaper cars. Ferrari needs to stay elitist or else it'll lose basically everyone that is buying their cars. They fit perfectly with F1 and in 10 years it'll pretty much be a bunch of Ferrari's in the parking lot at Formula One races if they keep treating their fans like crap while other race series are doing everything they can to get them.

First it's ignorant to say NASCAR drivers aren't talented at what they do. Granted it's not F1 but it is a different driving discipline. I'd even argue that a NASCAR driver has a much higher demand for concentration than an F1 driver. The old joke in road racing is "racing is 90% boredom 10% sheer terror". Most of the time you're running your own race with very few competitors around and only about say, 10% of the time are you actually engaged in direct competition. For a NASCAR driver I'd say it's the other way around. Granted there is a lot of follow the leader but the amount of room for error is much smaller. They're also at it a lot longer than two hours. I certainly wouldn't want to be stuck in one of those sweat boxes inhaling exhaust fumes (a big problem for NASCAR drivers) for three to four hours. Most of the negative comments I'd venture have come from individuals who've never turned a wheel in anger on a race track. I have respect for anyone who dons a helmet, suit, and gloves and gets out on anything from a KART to a NASCAR to an F1 car.

Now as far as Ferrari or another foreign manufacturer getting into NASCAR well... you just can't show up with a car. If that were the case Toyota would already be racing in NASCAR. The series is extremely exclusionary. First the engine must be a push-rod engine. No over head cams allowed. I don’t believe Ferrari has such an engine. Do they? Do you think they’d like to make one? Neither do I. It must be carbureted. Once again, do you think they’d like to make one? Good we’re still in agreement. Next, everyone must run with a Ford solid axel rear end. No I’m not kidding. Whether you have a Ford or a Chevy you run with the standard specified rear end. It keeps cost and performance down. As does the carburetor for those who were wondering about that rule. Everyone runs with a tube frame. Many different cars although wearing different bodywork share the same frame. You could actually have a Chevy Malibu running the same chassis as a Dodge Charger. Once again it keeps costs down. So they say. Those are just a few of the hoops a manufacturer would have to jump through once the get to NASCAR. Getting there is a different matter all together.

Toyota will be there in a few years only because they’ve been pounding around the NASCAR truck series for a few years. I don’t think Ferrari would be willing to do so in order to try to get into NASCAR. They have a product that can be directly related to the series and can reap the benefits of participation with individuals that actually can buy their products. And when they get into NASCAR with an engine that is currently the class of the field they’ll also be able to market directly to an audience that may have been reluctant to buy their cars because they’re not American. By participating in the series they ostensibly will be saying “see, we’re not so bad, we like what you like and are supporting your choices.” I doubt anyone at Fiorano gives a rat’s ass what anyone sitting in a seat at a NASCAR race cares about.

True Ferrari used to be about racing. Now it seems it’s all about the bottom line. If it made good business sense for Ferrari to get into NASCAR they’d figure out a way to do it. It doesn’t so they won’t. Thank God too. When ever I see the Cavallino Rampante on a surfboard, laptop, shoes, or anything else where it seems it has no place I think that the old man must be turning in his grave.

Oh, I forgot. The 13 inch steel wheels are also standard running items. You'll need to put them on the car.

Livery looks great but design is all wrong. If Ferrari were to get into NASCAR they would have to follow Porsche's lead and develop a front engined V8 sedan to compete.

Other manufacturers will be watching how Toyota fares in NASCAR and it may be guaranteed that they will be putting their toes into the proverbial
    pond.

I suppose I could've been more diplomatic but then again so could the naive individuals expressing their ill informed opinions about a sport they are incompetent in at any level, in any car. Ahh, there I go again.

Not even close! It would be very difficult for those guys to be competitive in any series that uses downforce, carbon brakes, and paddle shifters, not to mention fuel injection and right turns!
